One on one personalized care

Pet care experience

I have been a dog lover my entire life and always dreamed of having a dog of my own. That dream became true when we got our dog Shasta three years ago. Being out in nature is one of my favorite things and so your dog will spend a lot of time exploring Nanaimo's many beautiful parks and beaches with us, rain or shine. If like Shasta, your furry friend prefers more of a calm sensory walk (smelling all of the wonderful doggy smells!), we are more than happy to do that too. Excess energy will be burnt off inside with a good, hard play. You can bring some of your own toys for a bit of comfort from home (if your dog has a favourite stuffie like Shasta does please bring that!) or use ours for a novel experience. I am familiar with clicker training and use it to strengthen my bond with Shasta. I am not willing to use negative re-enforcement as I believe that it is counter-productive. If your dog is allowed treats (freeze-dried liver, Hills soft savories etc.), I will give them for good behavior (or even just because!). You can also bring your own if your dog has food allergies or is a gourmet hound and will only eat a certain type. I really enjoy grooming Shasta myself and am interested in becoming a professional groomer. Unfortunately, I do not have the equipment or the experience to accept clients. I am, however, totally willing to do any maintenance work (brushing, daily toothbrushing) free of charge. Just pack your fur baby's everyday essentials and I will take care of those tangles! I would be delighted to provide your happy hound with the best possible care! If you are interested in my services, please send me a message through Rover's messaging system!

Maya was absolutely stellar. She was very helpful and accommodating on short notice, sent me lots of pictures & updates, & was patient with my travel plans as I came back a day later than I expected. Her dog Shasta was a great housemate to Cody & I was happy to hear they got along well. Maya took my pup on forest & beach walks & was responsive to his needs as a senior. I would definitely rely on Maya to take great care of my dog again. Wonderful sitter!!

Maya was amazing with our Boston terrier Maison! She was great with him, communicative with us and took him on several long walks & sent photos! We would highly recommend Maya.

Information Maya F. would like to know about your pet

Shasta is low energy and prefers dogs with similar personalities. I LOVE puppies, and would be happy to accommodate them, though I do charge a little extra as they require a lot more attention than an adult dog. Since Shasta is small, I would prefer smaller dogs so that everybody stays safe. We also do not have space for a large dog in our house and car. I do not really have breed preferences as I believe that any dog can be wonderful regardless of breed. However, I do not have the resources to host aggressive dogs, dogs with a herding instinct, extreme barkers and dogs lacking bite inhibition as well as the wonderful but overly exuberant dogs that might bounce right on top of Shasta and injure her. It is preferred that your dog has some basic manners (come, sit, stay) but I realize that no dog is perfectly behaved all the time. Before sitting, here is a list of things that I would like to know: Any known medical conditions and what to do in the case of an emergency What really annoys your dog (ie. having people touch his food, paws etc.) What makes your dog happy (belly rubs, favorite stuffies, eating separately) If your dog is allowed treats (which ones) Any behavioral issues and how to handle them (barking, pulling etc.) How much food does your dog eat per day and what kind How many times your dog needs to go potty per day Any odd quirks that are unique to your dog!

A typical day

We will be going on walks both around our neighborhood and at nearby parks such as Neck Point, Piper's Lagoon and Lost Lake. The dogs will be on a six-foot leash (preferably with a harness) as I do not feel comfortable with letting them off leash when the dog does not yet have an emotional attachment to me and retractable leads can be unreliable. This will not restrict your dog's ability to enjoy a day out though as he/she can still frisk and frolick while on the leash or I can run with them if they want. In-between walks, your dog will be entertained with a variety of different toys as well as challenging food puzzles. If your dog wants to bring his/her own favorite cuddly from home, that would be great! Although Shasta does not wreck toys, I will make sure that she does not steal your dog's toy!
