The Canine Inn

Pet care experience

I knew I wanted to be a pet sitter after I found myself in the habit of asking my neighbors if I could pet sit their dogs. I love dogs for their unconditional affection and companionship. There’s nothing more rewarding than bonding with dogs! As a stay-at-home mother, I give a lot of hands-on attention and love to my dog houseguests. I pay close attention to dietary needs and emotional state of the dog, and I love snuggling and petting them. I'm very responsive to my clients over email or text, so you can be sure that your dog is happy, safe and loved. I'm also happy to accept multiple dogs within the same family. To make it affordable, your second dog is $15 a night and third dog is $10 a night within the same family. Larger dogs are ok as long as they are leash trained and do not pull. They must be able to get up and down from couches and do stairs on their own. For dogs who require medication I prefer to have the owner physically demonstrate how they give a pill to their dog so the administration is seamless during their stay. Pill pockets are really helpful treats to bring along for inserting medication into for administration. Meeting your pet at a Meet and Greet is a requirement prior to accepting a booking for care. Your dog must be fully housebroken (independent of wee wee pads) and socialized to children. Any past aggressive behavior or "boot camp" behavioral corrective training should be disclosed at the Meet and Greet to make it an enjoyable safe experience for your pet and our family. I have been pet sitting dogs for years, and have worked with a variety of breeds. While I was growing up, I helped train and raise two dogs in my family home using The Monks of New Skete training book. I've always owned mixed breeds. Over the years we've also taken in lost dogs, chickens and even sheep and cared for them until the owner was found. I have two children, ages 10 and 14, who live with me half of the time. They have helped me raise chicks to hens, ducks, honey bees and have helped with dog and cat sitting. They are very empathic, calm and nurturing like me towards animals. I'm highly empathic and intuitive with people and animals. I can sense their energy, how they're feeling and what they need. I'm a born nurturer, and I love connection. Dogs are highly intuitive and nurturing too, so I feel that we’re a lot alike. It's a win-win! When I’m not pet sitting, I love creative writing, gardening, cooking and reading. Due to it being too stressful on the family, we no longer take dogs with separation anxiety. If your dog has blindness, or a debilitating condition such as hip problems, a one night trial is required with your dog before boarding for longer on another stay. We do not accept dogs that howl and cannot self-soothe to sleep due to disruption to the family's need for sleep and to perform throughout the day. Dogs must be able to be left alone to run errands for at least 2-3 hours per day without concern for self-harm due to clawing, pushing at gates, etc. If it is found that the level of severity of a dog's anxiety/debilitating condition goes beyond what is safe and reasonable to accommodate in a residential dwelling and keep the dog from self-harm; then the owner will be contacted and options will be discussed for appropriate boarding elsewhere for which I will assist to the best of my ability to facilitate. While it is tempting to receive one-on-one affordable care in a home I encourage owners to think carefully about what are their dog's needs, what is the best environment to meet those needs, and what management plan and emergency steps need to be in place should those needs exceed a residential environment. It may be their own home with a boarder coming to them, it may be another person's house or require greater socialization and care such as a kennel, pet hotel or veterinary hospital. The goal is to keep your pet safe, calm, free of distress and to make it a positive experience for both dog and sitter. Our place is centrally located to the I-405 and I-5 corridor and is conveniently en route to Kenmore for driving around the top of the lake into Seattle. So drop your little guy or gal off on the way to work and rest easy while you're away knowing they're being loved!

Maryann provided wonderful care for my senior gal, Wishes. She has trouble with steps, and Maryanne was creative in finding ways inside her house with 1 small step. She provided timely and daily updates, which provided great comfort. She and her children provided lots of live, and Wishes came home a happy girl. I was able to enjoy my trip, knowing Wishes was in compotent hands!

Mary Ann did an amazing job watching our sweet Dorothy pup while we were out of town for a night. She asked all the right questions beforehand and was extremely flexible with pick-up and drop-off times. We received lots of updates with pictures and it was evident that our little girl got plenty of love and attention. We can't recommend her enough and hope that she will watch Dorothy again in the future!

Information Maryann E. would like to know about your pet

Clients tend to come to me with elderly dogs where a kennel environment would be too stressful for them and a little extra TLC is required. Because of this I like to learn the following: Has your dog ever been boarded or with another family before? If so how did it go? Any negative experiences or negative reviews from a caregiver and why? What is prompting the change of caregivers? Is your dog fully housebroken free of wee wee pads? Any aggression or past boot camp training to correct adverse behavior? Size/weight of dog? Does your pet have any dietary restrictions, fleas, illness, skin conditions, allergies or other medical condition or require administering medicine? Does your pet prefer medication hidden in a treat, taken from the hand or does one need to open the mouth? How does your dog handle being in new houses? Any separation anxiety or howling if not in the same room with someone? Could you please bring a t-shirt or sheet/blanket you have slept in with your scent? For older dogs, how is your pet's vision and hearing? Can he/she do stairs? Does your pet jump dog gates? How does your dog get on with other dogs, children, males? Does your dog like people to approach them for affection or prefer to have you wait for them to come to you. Does the dog pull on leash or have any aggressive tendencies toward other dogs or people while walking? Is your pet spayed or neutered? Does your pet have an ID tag or microchip? Do you have a veterinarian waiver authorizing sitters to take action during emergencies, payment/billing prearranged, and a cap off amount the vet is allowed to go up to for treatment? If you don't have a vet in the area would you be open to a local one for the visit? For clients without a service nearby I have started using Evergreen Veterinary Hospital in North Kirkland. They have emergency slots open throughout the day and are willing to service my clients pending authorization from them. Could you please provide veterinarian documentation if your dog has a concerning medical condition? Do you have any toys, brush, bed, blanket, treats you want to bring along for your pet? How often would you like updates and pictures of your pet during the stay? Generally I give one in the morning and one at night for the first couple of days and then move down to one a day unless otherwise requested. Thank you!

A typical day

We will take long walks around the nearby Country Village (Bothell); a close by dead end street that is about a quarter mile long; and around my microfarm for quick potty breaks. Your pet will be an active part of the family participating (on leash) with us gardening and day camping out back. During better weather we will go to parks if client is amenable.
