"The Teacher's Pet" Care

Pet care experience

I am a retired teacher who now prefers pets over pupils. I have experience with all sizes and breeds of dogs as I have been the "go to person" for all of my friends through the years. I am a caring person who wants both you and your pet to be comfortable. I know that it was hard for me to leave my sad faced dog to go to work each day knowing she would be bored. Even harder was the thought of putting her in a crowded, impersonal kennel when we traveled. My goal is to provide the kind of care that will have your pet begging to return to my house (or not wanting to leave) while permitting you to work or travel, guilt and worry free, knowing that your beloved pet is being treated to a wonderful vacation of his or her own. I have clearances and tons of patience (I taught junior high). I also have two daughters, one who is 29 and the other who is 23 that live with me. They work and are in college but love to give love to the dogs that stay at our home. They are also instrumental in walking your pet. The nice thing about having three of us in the home is that your pet is seldom, if ever, alone as we try very hard to work our schedules so that someone is always here with your fur baby.

Mary is a blessing. My dog absolutely loves her. She went above and beyond when caring for him while I was on a much needed Vacation. I can't recommend her highly enough. Thank you so much!!!!

Our Frenchie, Middles, had a great stay with Mary. She’s super caring and communicative — we’ll definitely be back!

Another fantastic stay with Mary! Finn stayed an extra day this time and loved every minute of it!

Hands down, Mary has been my best experience on Rover. Finn had an amazing stay. Her desire to know and learn about him was greatly appreciated. My dog is a rescue and has separation anxiety. It took no time at all for him to become comfortable with her, sitting right on her lap. I very much enjoyed all the photos with comments. His visit was highly active and he quickly passed out in the back seat on the car ride home. I recommend Mary without reservation and I look forward to booking with her again soon!

My daughters and I work hard to maintain your fur baby's routines and will follow what you do at home. Communication is key and you will receive daily updates and pictures / videos while your baby stays with us. Often we send these via personal texts so that is why it looks like we aren't sending them via the Rover number. Also, we book many animals through our local vet offices in addition to through Rover so that is why you see so many pictures of animals on our profile that have not been booked through Rover. This is also the reason that we often times cannot accept Rover requests at the last minute as we are sometimes booked by regular clients far in advance. We try to keep our calendar up to date as best as possible and we do get last minute cancellations. It is always worth a try to message and see if we have availability. We promise if you get in, you won't be disappointed!

Information Mary O. would like to know about your pet

I have no breed preferences. I love all dogs. However, I prefer small to medium breeds, only because it is easier for me to handle with my knee replacement. I will ask you to fill out an intake form and do a meet and greet prior to watching your fur baby. Examples of questions on the intake form are: * What does your dog like to do for fun? * Does your dog nap a lot? What is his / her sleep schedule like? * How does your pet let me know they need to go to the bathroom? How often does your pet pee / poop? What does a normal poop look like for your pet? How long does it usually take for your pet to go pee or poo? (I need to know if there is a problem or if the dog is sick) * How often do you feed? What do you feed? How much? Is your pet allowed to eat "people food?" * What about treats? Type? How many? Does your pet get them for doing special things or just because he or she is cute? * Is your pet allowed on furniture / bedding? * Does your pet get along with cats / other dogs / kids? - In an emergency situation, I may have to watch a cat or dog or even a small child. Remember, I am the "go to person". Doesn't happen often, but I need to be prepared in case it does. * Is your pet crate trained? * Is your pet scared of anything in particular or does anything make him or her nervous? How do you calm your pet? Does your pet have a special "lovey" / toy? * Where does your pet sleep? * Emergency contacts? Vet info? Preferred emergency animal hospital? * Medical needs, including daily medicine and any emergency medicine that your pet might need for a bee sting or seizures etc. * How does your pet do at the dog park? Do you want me to go there? * Is your pet up to date on vaccinations? * Is your pet on flea prevention? * Does your pet like to ride in a car? Must he or she be restrained in car? * What else would you, the owner, like me to know about your dog to make his or her stay more enjoyable? - For instance, does your pet like to be petted at a certain spot, or need to have a longer walk right before bed, or doesn't like his / her ears touched or whatever? My overall goal is to know as much as I can so that I can become your best friend's friend!

A typical day

We mostly walk in my neighborhood. I live near a very large, tree lined cemetery. It may sound creepy, but it is very peaceful there. We often see wildlife including deer, rabbits etc. Sometimes, we take a car ride to the walking paths in our town. I like to play fetch or frisbee in my fenced back yard if they are allowed off leash. Sometimes, we hangout on my back patio and watch the sunset. If it is too hot to be outside, we may "chill" in the a/c and watch animal planet or play with toys inside. If your dog likes to nap, he / she is welcome to share my king size bed. Rest assured that when your pet is with me, no matter what we end up doing, he or she will be spoiled and loved!

Availability

We are available for daily visits and walks, as well as weekly or longer stays in our home. We will also house sit at your home. We provide play time, belly rub time and whatever else your furry family member needs to make it through the hours until you get home. I have owned a dog my entire life. We had to put down my beloved dog, Jenna, in November 2017, and I don't want to get another one as I plan on selling my home and traveling in a few years. Dog sitting is a way to supplement my retirement income, but more than that, it is a way for me to feed my need to be near a doggie pal every day. My feeling is that dogs are family, and I promise that I will treat your best friend like a member of mine! Addendum: We have inherited my sister's dog since she passed away so there is a dog in our household now. Please DO NOT try to book if your dog does not get along with other dogs. Thank you.
