Great Astoria Digs 4 Fido or Fifi!

Pet care experience

Maria, Bango, and Olive (1 human, 2 dogs) live in a beautiful and BIG house in Astoria, NY, just minutes from midtown Manhattan. How big? Well, for New York City standards, this place is a palace: I offer a big backyard with 6-foot fence that is actually up a 10-foot retaining wall. Approximately 1200 sqft of private outdoor space (dirt, mulch and brick and paved portions) as well as approximately 1200 sqft of indoor space. I am the homeowner, so everything I do and all the pets I care for are 100% legit! I also have a solarium, an all-weather room with more windows than walls, where cats LOVE to watch the hundreds of birds that come to out yard to feast and bathe. Dogs love to sunbathe on the couch in the solarium, as well! I offer a 24-7 video monitoring system in the kitchen and dining room, which is where pets stay when I'm not home. Luckily, I'm home most of the time as I work from home. My dogs are never alone for more than 3 hours at most, and that much only once or twice a week. Bango is an F1 Goldendoodle, and he has been a therapy dog with the Good Dog Foundation. He's also a cover model for a book called "The New York Dog" and he's been in a Banana Republic campaign this year as well as shot a music video for a band called "Goldfish." Olive, a purebred Great Dane, has yet to discover her calling in life, as she's still shy with strangers, but she is a very gentle girl: her best friend is a 10-pound Miniature Pinscher who lives down the street! We also offer some other basics: I have a BIG crate if you prefer dogs to be crate-trained during their stay, I have a BIG jacuzzi in our bathroom for baths, I have no stairs in the house that dogs need to navigate, and just a gentle slope of a driveway. I live a great life here in Astoria and I'm frequently asked to pet-sit for my friends and neighbors, so this is a great opportunity to make some spare cash (for TREATS and TOYS of course!) while having new and fun dogs and cats come stay with our crew. Why I love dog sitting At my house, Mom and Dad brought home a puppy a couple of times, but we never had a dog very long before they would give it to someone else who could care for it better. As an adult, I've wanted a dog forever, and admired those belonging to others, but I knew that it would only be a good time when I'd made sure to get a pet-friendly home with a yard, plenty of time, a flexible schedule and financial stability. The time was right in August of 2012 and now I have 2 large 4-legged children to enjoy for many years to come. About my yard I have a large 1200 sqft yard that is completely fenced in, with a 6-foot fence and a 10-foot retaining wall, as well. It is partially a garden (with dirt, bushes, a tree, and mulch) and partially a paved and bricked yard. I also have a 3-car garage and a solarium. And for those summer days, I have a 6-foot kiddie pool for the dogs to cool off. The gate to the yard and the front of the house are watched 24/7 by security cameras.

Maria pet-sat my cat Blue for 4 weeks this summer. I don't know what I would have done without her. My husband and I had to take a long overseas trip, and we couldn't take Blue with us as she recently had surgery and was still recovering. We needed to find someone trustworthy and caring, who we could rely on to give her the remaining course of antibiotics, and make sure she was recovering well. Maria was the only person we could trust to care for Blue under these circumstances, and for such an extended length of time. We left knowing our pet was in good hands, and Maria was even kind enough to send us pictures and updates while we were away. Blue really enjoyed her stay, especially the climbing toys, posts, and perches that Maria has throughout her home (and we don't!). Blue recovered quicker than we all expected, and even got to socialize with other pets for a change (she is an only-cat : ) I would highly recommend Maria to anyone who needs a pet sitter.

We left our furbaby Kathy with Maria for two weeks. She truly had a blast. Maria and her husband are extremely loving and attentive towards all the dogs. Kathy got plenty of exercise along with regular walks. Maria was kind enough to send me pictures and video and I could see how content my baby was. I know Kathy is always in caring hands with Maria.

Maria is absolutely great with dogs! She has the capacity to watch both large and small dogs. I have a 4 year old Miniature Pinscher who has stayed with Maria several times while I traveled for business. She takes care of my dog as if they were her own. Additionally, Maria has a solid understanding of dog behavior and first-aid. *She has a large, fenced in yard where the dog can play freely and have fun!

Maria is a wonderful dog-sitter. She watched our little dog Coal for the weekend and he had a great time (he didn't want to leave)! She will pamper your pup; highly responsible and attentive. She even managed to take Coal to Coney Island for a good time walking!

Information Maria A. would like to know about your pet

I'd love to hear where your dog came from originally, as much as you know. Does he or she exhibit any behaviors such as: food or toy guarding, leash aggression, anxiety due to being away from you, away from home, weather, etc? What are his / her favorite toys or games? How does he / she show that she has to go potty outside? Or do we need to work on that? What does your dog eat and when?

Here's where we'll take our walks We live in Astoria but on weekends, we often go on adventures in other areas of Long Island, Upstate NY, Pennsylvania, NJ, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. We drive there and then hike some trails with the dogs or visit a big dog park. Here in the neighborhood, we take walks to Rainey Park, which is around 9 acres, but we also do sidewalk walking for about an hour every morning when not running in the park. In the evening, we do another 45-minute walk. There is a small beach nearby as well, and Bango loves to swim in the East River there. We've even walked them over the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan and over the Roosevelt Island Bridge, which is only about half a mile away. Maria loves to run, so if an owner requests, we will go on a short run with your dog. Dogs really don't like to go too far, usually only a mile or two. We also offer a lure coursing machine for dogs that want and need to sprint after a lure at high speed, particularly sighthounds. Your dog's sleeping arrangement Wherever your dog is most comfortable: we offer several dog beds and mats, as well as our bed, and a crate if your dog is more comfortable that way. Bango, our Goldendoodle, sleeps on our bed with us but also gets up and sleeps on the floor in the corner of the bedroom. Olive has her own XXL bed to sleep on, but around 6am she creeps up on our bed to snuggle, too. Time I'll spend with your dog All but 2 hours. We can't get enough of each other.
