Medical student & dog/cat mom of 5!

Pet care experience

I grew up with dogs and cats, and adopted my own dog at age 20. Ten years later, I am now the proud mom of three dogs - Toulouse, Rouen & Lille - and two cats - George & Daisy. Spending time with my furry friends is the best part of my day, and helping you by taking care of yours when you can't be home is an honor. I'm a medical student at UC and have a veterinarian for a sister. I've helped dogs and cats through cancer treatments, surgeries, chronic pain, various acute and chronic diseases, complex medication regimens and beyond. Many of the animals I work with have medical issues and require special diets, oral medications, insulin injections, etc. While I adore working with all animals, I have come to find a niche in caring for both senior and medically complex cats and dogs, which allow me to utilize my expertise to put both owner and pet at ease during what might have been a stressful time. My goal is always to prevent this stress, and I do so primarily by ensuring excellent communication with owners before and during the stay. I've worked with dogs and cats both of all ages, sizes, breeds and personalities, and love and respect them all for all their interesting quirks and differences. With three pups and two cats at home, and significant experience working with multi-pet families, I have also found a niche here, and greatly enjoy the opportunity to engage with multiple furry friends in one visit, and to employ a multitude of skills and assess the needs of several animals at once. This is a challenge I greatly enjoy. With 30+ years experience living with and caring for both dogs and cats, combined with my medical background, I feel very confident that your pet is in great hands with me.

Knowing Madeleine was taking care of our pup and kitten put us at ease while we were away. She spent quality play and snuggle time with our pets, and made sure everyone was fed on time too. She took our dog on lovely walks every morning, and took lots of photos of both pets so we could see what they were up to. We will definitely be scheduling visits with Madeleine again!

Madeleine was fantastic! She took care of everything while we were away and we came home to a happy pup, kitten, and a clean house. She quickly responded to texts and was flexible when we needed to make schedule changes. She also took great photos and videos! Our kids loved being able to see our pets while we were away. Our pup and kitten absolutely adored her.

Safety, trust & environment

I feel very strongly in connecting with the owner and learning how things are usually done in the home, and reinforcing that during my time with your pet. However you guys do things on walks and whatever your rules are in the house, that's how I'll be doing them when I'm with your pets. Consistency is key. Furthermore, I always strive to create a Fear Free environment and to practice Fear Free animal care. We have one shy pup ourselves, and know firsthand the stress on the animal and owner when a pet is nervous, uncomfortable or afraid. I work to use Fear Free principles to ensure all pups and kitties I work with feel safe at all times, and I feel strongly that this is the best way to build a relationship based upon trust, which is essential in bonding with, and especially in providing good medical and other care for, your furry family members.

Information Madeleine W. would like to know about your pet

Let me know if your pet has any special needs, injuries, medical conditions, disabilities, or behavioral concerns. I've worked with dogs and cats experiencing a number of different physical and behavioral problems over the years, from hind limb paralysis to extreme separation anxiety and beyond, and I am happy to accommodate your furry friend and help them be their best, healthiest and safest self!

A typical day

I love to be active and get out and explore with your pup. Long walks, jogs and hikes are great ways to get out some of their energy and get us both moving! That said, I also love to hang at home or in the back yard with dogs, including doing nose work and other indoor games that stimulate their brain and sensory systems in different ways! And if snuggling up on the couch is what they're into - sign me up! For active kitties that enjoy playing with wands and other toys, happily, so do I! I also fully respect furry friends who would rather just hang out quietly, and always honor their preferences around their personal space. I also happen to have a great love for photography, and I have found over the years that animals are some of my favorite subjects. They are inquisitive, honest, candid, emotive, and often downright hilarious in front of the lens. So for the camera happy pets I work with who are comfortable being photographed, I often send a great many snaps captured during my stay to the owner to show what all we've been up to. I know personally how precious every single photo I have of each of my furry friends is to me, especially those of my sweet girl Stoli, who passed away after a long battle with cancer last year. The countless shots I took of her may be many, but to me each and every single one of them is priceless, and I am so happy for every time I reached for my camera and clicked to capture her wonderful image. Given how special those photos are to me, having the opportunity to share photos I capture during my time with your pet brings me incredible joy, and I hope my photos bring a smile to your face as well.

I am currently on a research year in medical school. I am working from home and have a very flexible schedule for the year. I typically organize my drop-in's in the evenings for clients whose times are flexible, but am usually able to accommodate other times as well. As I am working from home for the year, I am able to work from your home while pet sitting; I can therefore be at your home to watch your pet(s) during the day, as well as in the evenings and overnight. (My husband, Wilhelm, stays home with our five fur babies when I am away pet sitting!)
