About Dario Franchitti Riley

Dari is a gift. He was on his way to a humane society at about 7 wks of age after he was nearly killed by the first dog his initial owners had. Luckily, they were neighbors. He came over the fence and never left! I'd never owned a german shepherd before so had no clue what to expect. Totally NOT the dog they are made out to be, just like pibbles! Wonderful family dog, he is BIG for a gsd, and he's been amazing with all the fosters we've had, and then with our own second dog as well. He is also a major protector, when he needs to be, so I trust his judgement better than mine, lol. I have a human son, who was 6 when we got Dari, and I always say now I have two sons; one is just a little hairier than the other!

  • Sex: Male
  • Age: 11 years, 5 mo. old
  • Weight: 100 lbs
  • Breed: German Shepherd Dog
  • Tracking Chip: Yes
  • Neutered: Yes
  • House Trained: Yes
  • Gets along with children: Yes
  • Gets along with other dogs: Yes
Dari does have some hip/back leg issues, and he is my #1 priority. He is the world's sweetest and best dog, but his unsteadiness is sometimes risky with some dogs. He has always gotten along with every foster we've ever had, but his safety and comfort will also be a factor in deciding what dogs I might board at my home.
  • Gets along with cats: No
I used to have cats, and my older dog did fine with them. With fosters, cats are an unknown, so I don't have them anymore.

Special Requirements

As mentioned above, Dari is in great health with the exception of some hip and leg issues. Normal 11 yo big dog stuff.

About Lucy Riley

Lucy is my "hot mess". :) At 4, she has settled down considerably, but she has always been very high energy. She is special needs, as she is deaf, partially blind, and has had a variety of medical issues to deal with since birth. The rescue I worked with had pulled her pregnant mother; the first 3 pups were born dead, Lucy was the 4th. The last 2 are healthy and huge, mostly boxer looking. Lucy is presently under no special medical care, not taking any med's. She was a dog who would have been hard to place in an adoptive family, and my son convinced me we needed a puppy! Totally underestimated how challenging having a deaf dog would be, but we've worked it out! She knows some sign language, knows to look to me or my son frequently for direction. And her big brother knows how to "fetch" her for those times she's on the far side of the yard and isn't looking at me! Her craziness is only matched by her sweetness; she LOVES people, and her excitement at seeing new folks, ones she knows, etc .... is obvious. She is a 60 lb lap dog who would kiss you and be on top of you all day if you'd let her.
