Ultimately, our cats are alive and well, but there were some issues. When Lena visited to meet the cats and see everything that needed to be done, I showed her the cats’ food and water bowls. We keep the cat food in air-tight containers in the kitchen, but extra bags of food are stored in the basement. I showed Lena the containers of food and the extra bags. Food bowls were moved from the kitchen to the living room (something the cats have never done on their own), and the bowls were empty. The food containers were also empty. We also found cat urine and feces outside the litter box. Based on how dry some of the feces and urine were, I suspect that some of the accidents were several days old when we found them. We have an older female cat that does not get along with two of our other cats. I had told Lena that the older cat has her own room with a baby gate that the older cat can pass through, but the two who antagonize her cannot. When we returned home, the gate was open and the older cat’s nose was scratched and covered in scabs. On the second-to-last day of cat sitting, Lena had mentioned that the cats were fighting, but this followed a message about the older cat eating a lot, so I thought it was only food-related. Had I known how bad the fighting was, I would have reminded Lena to keep the gate to the older cat’s room closed. My wife had been growing over a hundred different seedlings in the basement, preparing them over winter and spring for summer planting. We asked Lena to water both the inside and outside plants. She agreed to do this for an extra fee, which we paid. When we talked about watering the indoor seedlings, she stated she was making a note, and I remember her typing in her phone. When we returned home, all but a few were dead from lack of water. All the money and time spent growing the plants from seeds has been wasted.
