Certified Behavior Consultant

Pet care experience

**I have been closed to new clients for the past 2 years, but I am considering accepting new clients in the next few months** I am certified canine behavior consultant specializing in fearful, anxious, and reactive dogs. I hold a CBCC-KA designation from the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers, and am one of just 5 people who hold that designation in Kansas. For over a decade, I have consulted with shelters, rescues, fosters, and pet parents on canine behavior, as well as helping to implement playgroups and arousal control in kennel & shelter environments. I work with a well-respected behavioral organization in the KC metro that has a deeply experienced behavioral team. Our team was recently named the best trainers of 2023 by Kansas City Magazine. I've attended seminars with Dr. Ian Dunbar, Ken Ramirez, Grisha Stewart, and many other experts in the field of dog behavior, and I continue to keep current with my field. I understand how anxiety and arousal impacts behavior, and how it can impact your pet when you are gone. Through my work in rescue, fostering, and doing classes and consults with clients throughout the metro, I have experience with a wide variety of dogs, including (but not limited to) blind, deaf, fearful, reactive, aggressive, resource guarding, and separation anxiety dogs of all ages. I have over a decade of professional experience as a behavioral trainer, but over 35 years of personal experience with animal care and pet sitting. I love dogs and just want to be able to provide exceptional care, as well help owners build better relationships with their furry family members.

Leanne is an experienced and astute observer of canine behavior and uses this knowledge to manage her dog guests so they have a quality stay. Her observations help us better understand our doggies--both came home happy and in fine fettle after 8 days.

Leanne was one of the 190k that lost power in the big storm just before we were to leave Copper with her. The communication of the situation was stellar, and she was able to build my confidence in the situation. It's telling that I'd rather leave my dog with Leanne and no power than any alternative with power. I know that Copper is treated like family when he's there, as evidence by his excitement when we drop him off. My first choice for lodging, everytime.

Our pup has stayed with Leanne several times and I always rest easy knowing he is in good hands with Leanne and her family.

LeAnne and her family took care of my dog like he was one of their own. My dog has separation anxiety and is shy. She slowly introduced him to the pack and helped him get more comfortable throughout his stay. She kept me updated daily by text on how he was doing and eating. Will request more stays with Leanne and her family if she agrees in the future!

I have a fenced yard and dogs are supervised inside the home and in the yard. I have 2 furry family members who are dog and people social. I have extensive experience with dog to dog introductions and interactions in a wide range of settings. I am a force-free trainer who practices science-based training principles and follows the AVSAB Humane Training Position Statement. As such, I will not use prong collars, choke collars, or e-collars. These items must be removed prior to your dog's stay and replaced with a flat collar or a martingale. Aversive measures such as leash pops, spray bottles, "whistle & missile," shake cans, etc. will not be used while your dog is in my care. Your pet is treated like a family member and special care is paid to observing stress levels and adjusting the environment and handling to make sure your baby is happy and comfortable. I am able to take dogs with behavioral concerns, but I will require a conversation to make sure they will do well and can be safe in my home environment. I may require a daycare appointment prior to a boarding stay in order for them to get to know us and determine how they will do before we decide if they will do well during a longer stay. Board and train rates are different than regular boarding rates and are subject to availability and a consultation. If you are an existing or previous client with another trainer or training organization, I will need to know prior to booking a stay.

Information Leanne B. would like to know about your pet

I can handle and work with a variety of behavioral and special needs dogs, but please let me know the full extent of their behavioral history so I can determine if they are suitable for my home environment, as well as keep them safe. Does your dog have anxiety, a bite history, specific fears, or reactivity? Any food allergies, medical concerns, resource guarding, destructive or heavy chewing behaviors? Do they eat or swallow non-food items? Are they a door bolter, escape artist, slip their collar, or have separation anxiety? Are they crate trained? Do you have specific training needs or goals during their stay? Let's have a conversation!

A typical day

We are a pretty laid back household. If appropriate, your dog can play with the dogs in our fenced in backyard or go on walks & sniff safaris through our neighborhood, to the park, or through downtown Overland Park. In summer months, we often have a dog pool and splash pad set up on hot days. Feeding toys and puzzle toys are given to provide mental stimulation and relieve anxiety. Mostly, we just cater the stay to your dog's specific needs, whether that's play, exercise, snuggles, or just having a quiet spot to decompress.

Availability

I am home except when I leave to do behavior consults or training classes. This is usually for a block of time that is no longer than 5 hours in a day and my schedule is flexible. When I am gone, someone in my family is present. They are all age 18 or older and have years of experience with a wide range of dogs, behavior, and safety protocols. As an added assurance, my family has fostered a human teen in the past, and we have passed all the home inspections and in-depth background checks required for that.
