A Dog's Best Friend

Pet care experience

My passion for dogs has always been present, but I got to actually work with them when I volunteered on a husky farm in Hetta, Finland. For three months I worked as the medical adviser on the farm and kept medical records of the dogs, and learned different signs to indicate a dogs well-being. I also trained several dogs everyday using positive reinforcement and verbal cues. Other responsibilities included; feeding and walking multiple dogs several times a day. Beyond my experience in Finland, I have also continued my passion for working with dogs, into local volunteer work. Through volunteering at Green Hill Humane Society, I have expanded my skills for caring for dogs, my training abilities have grown to include behavioral modification. By using clickers, and treats, in accompaniment with specific tasks, I can see specific behavior changes within two to three sessions. I am different from your average sitter or walker, because my love for dogs is insurmountable compared to most. Spending time with a dog is my favorite part of any day, and I try to make it a highlight for the dog as well. In the future I hope to continue working with dogs in any capacity, my specific goals are; to train therapy animals, specific to mental disabilities, and possibly expand into service dogs. My long term goal, is to open my own non-profit shelter, which will emphasize training which incorporates therapy elements into every adoptable dog.

Chloe took care of my golden retriever over Thanksgiving, and she was so wonderful! She was very responsive and communicative throughout (including sending me photos of my baby!) as well as professional. My dog had a hot spot on her tail during the visit, and Chloe dutifully sprayed her tail every day and dealt with the cone as well! Cali was so happy and well cared for when I got back. Definitely recommend Chloe!

She sat my house and my big stubborn baby. I came home to a sleepy dog that was well tired from not only physical exercise but also mental exercise. Laurel and was able to start redirecting my dog's behavior that I found very annoying for a long time I never thought I could get this Behavior trained out of my dog and she's done a fantastic job. I highly recommend her if you need any sitting services for your fur baby.

Laurelyn spent over 3 months, one summer, as an intern on a sled-dog farm in the Arctic working alongside a group of international guides whose job was to give care, attention and training to 150+ dogs. Each guide is given responsibility for the individual training needs of 15-20 dogs which are generally a mixture of normal sleddogs, very shy rescue dogs, boisterous husky pups, and old dogs. Each dog has an individual training plan depending on their needs to keep them physically and mentally stimulated through the non-working summer months. For the oldies, for instance, that might simply be some long walks or free running followed by massage to reduce stiffness. For the shy rescue dogs, it might be calm solo walks or clicker response training for positive interaction. For the pups, it is generally obedience, agility training or free running and for normal sleddogs, it is a range of the above + mush-specific training, eg in our labyrinth of hand-cut trails for training turn left and turn right. For Laurelyn, training was probably the highlight of her time with us and she excelled at it. You might think that anyone working on a sleddog farm would love dogs, but motivations for being here are wide and interest skills across the range of jobs available are also wide (building, running safaris, marketing etc). For Laurelyn, the dogs were her number 1 focus and she revelled in the time she was given to interact with and train with them. If there was ever a quiet moment, for instance, she could always be found outside with the dogs, cuddling or brushing them, (although she was also a very pleasant and well-liked member of the team and I am sure that you will enjoy interacting with her too!). Each of our dogs also has an individual feeding plan that is monitored and amended through weekly dog checks. This job involves an entire day of checking all dogs for any new lumps and bumps or hot spots or weight changes etc. It also involves thrice weekly heat and lactation checks, daily medication overview and a vast amount of associated paperwork. The role is huge and is generally given to just one person in the team since the linked paperwork is pretty complicated. During Laurelyn's summer with us, this became her role. It is one of immense responsibility since all of the feeding plans are driven by it and medical follow-ups, the timings of vaccinations, the giving of daily meds post operations etc, all fall under that person's care. We would not normally give the role to someone visiting us for just a short space of time but it was clear that Laurelyn was committed to working with dogs long term and we thought that she would benefit by learning from the tole. She will, therefore, be able to do a lot more with your dog than most dog care-givers. She will, for instance, be able to care for your dogs' nails and teeth, to check them to ensure that they have no mammary or testicular tumours developing, to monitor and give advice on their weight and to deal with basic wound care or to treat with basic meds in accordance to a prescribed veterinary routine etc. She will not only look after your dog well but she will enjoy doing so and the dogs will therefore enjoy the time she spends with them too. For her, dogs are a passion rather than a job and I can think of no-one that I would feel more confident entrusting the care of my dog to. I would like to know their basic character traits like energy level, training background (how you train them), what are their favorite toys, how do they interact with other dogs, and how sociable are they to different age groups. No breed Preference.

A typical day

If your home location is close to a park then I would of course try to make that a destination for a walk. In addition to your dog doing fun activities, fetch or playing with their favorite toys in a park I would also help with any training concerns you would have for things like leash biting.
