A fully fenced yard and supervised play areas offer a secure environment, monitored by cameras. We use a pet tracking device on the collar for additional security. I work closely with the desires of the owner on walks and other activities. My older dog doesn't care for long walks so we just get him out for fresh air and let him decide when he is done. My small energetic dog can go for hours so she may get a little more time out burning off energy.
