Retired Pet Lover with time

Pet care experience

Pets are people too. Having had a pet since i was just six, and caring for other people's pets (and houses) since a teenager, i have fallen gracefully into this pet/house sitting profession just as my mother did before me. Now that i am retired, I find it even more rewarding to be able to care for people's little ones (or big ones) while they are away so that they can know they are in loving hands. I have pet sat everything from llamas, horses and lizards, to cockatiels and raccoons, and of course the 'regular' home pet of chihuahuas to great danes. Having worked in two veterinary clinics when i went to college gave me other types of experience. (medication/shots/etc) I have also taken care of horses. I DO NOT HAVE A CELL PHONE. so no texting. My 16 pound cat ignores dogs, unless they try and 'play with him', then he just hisses. He is a lazy bum, but a cuddly bear to me.

Kayla was AWESOME! She came to our home to meet Willy and for him to get to know her. He is a rescue and we didn't know that much about him. Kayla was very thorough in her questions and she took notes. Willy seemed to have a good night and day with Kayla; she is very calm and has a soothing manner. We will DEFINITELY use her services again. (Kayla - I'm sorry it took me this long to write the review.. life has been well, life. THANK YOU for being such a GREAT puppy sitter!)

I was very happy with the care that my 4-year-old Shih Tzu received from Kayla. Communication was great and I especially appreciated the daily updates and photos. When I picked my dog up, she was happy and content and easily adjusted back into her "normal" routine. It was apparent that she had not been at all traumatized after being left for a week at Kayla's house.

I want to be fair, while also saying that we would not take our dog to Kayla again. Kayla was very nice. We went to her house before confirming our decision to leave Migo here for a week. Everything went well and she seemed happy to have Migo there. She does have a cat and we discussed that Migo has no experience with cats, and would probably chase the cat if given the chance. Still she did not seem concerned, or if she was, she should have declined to take care of Migo right then. I wish she had. We have used Rover numerous times in various locations (we like to take her to someone near where we travel if we drive). To our knowledge we have never had a negative experience. Please don't misunderstand, Migo was fine when we picked her up and I don't believe Kayla would ever hurt a dog. But these were the issues.... First she does not have a cell phone so communication was not as convenient as it could have been. We left Migo on Saturday and had no communication from her until I contacted her myself several days later to ask how Migo was. Second, she is apparently very strict with the dogs and expects obedience training. She complained that Migo did not understand "no", but otherwise was no problem. Maybe this expectation should be in her profile. Migo is 11 years old and knows many commands well, but apparently not "no" the way she said it. Third, Kayla is very opinionated and seemed to criticize the food we feed her as well as the quantity. We take very good care of our dog and don't need this type of advice. She asked us to bring a bowl for food, which my husband forgot and she made a big deal about finding a bowl since she doesn't have any. Sheesh! It's a half cup... anything would work. Fourth, and worst was her complaints about how traumatized her cat was, "didn't eat or poop for 4 days". She said Migo did not chase the cat until near the end of the visit but perhaps just the nearby "danger" caused her stress. We felt very sorry about that and really wished that she had made the choice to decline Migo's visit. We do not want any trouble and besides these items, found Kayla to be very pleasant. I think she cares about her doggy visitors.

Being of a 'certain age' larger dogs are no longer an option unless they are also of a 'certain age'. Larger dogs that bark excessively will probably not work if they do not stop when told to. I have one large cats at my house, so to stay at my house a dog must not be the type to have a deep desire to chase cats.

A typical day

If a dog needs a special place place to walk, they are welcome in my car. I have also trained dogs who need an unprofessional type of loving guidance. I can pill most dogs, and give shots for the diabetic ones. I have a large back yard for private exercise as well.
