Your pet’s favorite babysitter 🖤

Pet care experience

Hi Everyone! My Name is Kayla, I’m a stay at home mom and dog sitter. I have over 10 years of dog sitting experience and 5 years of dog training experience. Before I became a full-time dog sitter I was active duty in the army. Now my role is being a mom and homemaker. I’m a spouse to a great soldier; we have the sweetest kids, and a happy Aussie. Every few years we have to move to a new state and I get to expand my business and meet new clients. I’ve been on Rover for about 5 years and have been working full time for 2. I take pride in building my resume of good reviews and would encourage clients on giving honest reviews and consider me in the future and as well as sharing my business. My first year on Rover was a lot of fun. I got to watch myself come out of my shell while also helping people take care of their furry family members. My Husband and I both believe that pets are family, so we like to treat other people’s animals as such too. When your dog(s) or cat(s) come to visit you will be greeted by me first. I like to keep a clean and safe environment for your furbaby so I allow You, the owner, to look around the main areas of the house that your pet will be staying and socializing, i.e. the living room, kitchen, and backyard. I can provide extra supplies if you forget anything, I more then likely have it for your pet (just give me a heads up if possible and I’ll see what I have at the time). I usually try to have my own dog in the backyard or my bedroom when you first drop off your pet. If you have a dog, I like for them to get used to my house and it’s smells before meeting new animals. I try to make other people’s animals feel as comfortable as possible during their stay, whether it’s just a daycare or boarding for a long stay. No matter how much you tell your baby you’ll see them soon, they will feel shy in a new place with new people and new animals. If you have a cat, I will usually set them up in a private room, right now I have a spacious laundry room. Visiting cats may have a little less free roaming than visiting dogs just because cats tend to be more territorial and defensive in a new place. The way that I like to board cats is by giving them their own room with their litter box, a cat tree, cat toys, a window shelf for them to see the world, food and water, a scratching post, and a crate with a blanket inside incase they want a hiding place. Everyday I will put up my dog so that the visiting cat can roam safely around the house without being scared (my dog is cat friendly). After you drop off your baby I will go over your pet’s schedule, behavior, and if they’re on meds. If you are in a rush or if you are not comfortable coming into my home, I can easily meet you outside where we can discuss all boarding needs and expectations and I can walk your pet in myself. In regards to cats, I ask that owners bring them in a carrier to make transporting easier. For local house-sitting, I the client, ask you to allow me to visit your home a day or two before you leave. This is so you can show me where all of your pet’s supplies is, where the sleep or if they need to be crated, things to encourage or avoid, and for you to walk me through your pet’s daily routine. If you have multiple pets then I especially like to know if they need to eat separately or be crated. Some clients have appreciated me staying in their homes, while others have left me a key to just drop in every few hours each day. It is entirely up to you and what would make you and your animals the most comfortable. Just to keep in mind, I do have 2 children and they may need to come with me if their dad is working full duty days, is in field, deployed, etc. Drop-in clients receive all the same care that house-sitting clients do except I will not stay overnight in your home and I will require a spare key to be able to lock up after every check-in. When it comes to bother house-sitting and drop-ins, I leave the spare key on the kitchen counter and lock up the house on the day you’re coming home. I’ll communicate with you when I’ve done my last check in and where I put your key and when I leave your home. For Doggy Daycare, everything is very relaxed. All you have to do is let me know what time you’re dropping off your dog as well as pick up time. Unless I approve special circumstances, the latest pick up time for daycare is 6pm. If you have any special requests such as nail trimming or baths, please be sure to schedule those through Rover. I do not offer those services for free. If you need pick up or drop off services please let me know as well as requesting it through Rover. I do not offer those services for free and will need a heads up as we share 1 family car. We live on Fort Bragg. If you’re an off post, non-military client you can receive a pass at the main gate (All American) as long as your driver’s license, insurance, and registration is current. If you happen to arrive at the wrong gate, all you have to do is ask the gate guard to redirect you. Once you’re at the main gate office you’ll ask for a pass and it’ll take a few minutes. If you don’t have those things to be able to get a pass, you will have to let me know in advance so we can figure out a different plan. Many gates are closed on weekends and holidays, if you aren’t sure what gate to use, please let me know and I can send the proper information. I do not offer military discounts. If you have any questions or concerns for me please let me know in your message when requesting a booking! Thank you so much!

As usual, yet another successful and pleasant stay for our Maggie at Kayla's house! Maggie always has a great time with Kayla and her kiddos, and Kayla always keeps up well-informed and updated throughout Maggie's stay. I appreciate how flexible and understanding Kayla is if "life happens" or a scheduling conflict arises; she really is the best and I would recommend her to anybody! Thanks again Kayla!

Kayla seems nice, but I don't think she has the experience, confidence, or knowledge to safely and properly handle many dogs at this point in her journey. She panicked upon normal dog behavior (barking after a bad introduction to her dog; more on that later), had no ideas for mitigation strategies, and did not try to implement any I suggested to her when she contacted me to say she didn't want to watch him after all. As a result, my husband and I had to drop everything while on separate work trips, to implement emergency contingency plans. My husband dropped off our 7 month old Doberman puppy and within minutes I got a frantic message that she couldn't keep him because he was barking, and she was worried about the MPs coming. My dog has had multiple successful sitters; is well socialized to people, places, situations, and several dogs; has exhibited no signs of being behavioral; is in formal training; and has never had separation anxiety noted by a sitter, vet, or groomer. I advised Kayla twice - incl. in my puppy's profile - that he got very excited around dogs and it was something we're working on, so handlers must be aware. Note, every sitter my puppy has been with also has dogs, and my puppy played well with them. When I asked what happened before the barking began, she said she brought her dog and my puppy up to each other "eye to eye" (and my puppy may have been crated; that's unclear). I've raised multiple Dobes, spent 10+ years at shelters and done many different schools of dog training, and this is not an ideal intro for dogs. Not surprisingly, my puppy got excited and barked, and Kayla said her dog got aggressive. The fact that she had no ideas for any mitigation strategies speaks to the lack of knowledge and experience. I gave her ideas for distraction and then suggested she let my puppy outside to burn off the bad experience, and she told me she was nervous because he was "eyeing the fence." I explained he has never attempted to jump our 4 ft fence to date. She then mentioned she had never dealt with this breed. At this point, I realized it was not a safe environment for my puppy, thus her request to give him back was best for everyone. However it was extremely inconvenient given I was across the country and my husband was trying to leave with colleagues for an important work event. It would have been better if she realized she was nervous or uncomfortable handling my puppy before she accepted. I requested a meet and greet 1.5 weeks in advance and the timing didn't work out. Kayla said it was no big deal because she only requested meet and greets if dogs were cautious of people. I would suggest anyone considering Kayla require a meet and greet, where they can verify she has the confidence required to safely and properly handle your specific dog.

Another amazing stay for Maggie, and hopefully she can stay at Kayla's house again in the near future! Thanks again Kayla for being so flexible with my family's schedule and for the "spur of the moment" instances that came up this weekend. Maggie had looked happy, energetic, and well rested! I recommend Kayla's services to anybody!

In all honesty I will spoil your pets. I have an abundance of toys, snacks, blankets, furniture they are allowed to nap on, and a fenced yard. I also have an amazingly laid back Aussie to keep them company. There’s a good reason that I have repeat clients, their dogs LOVE it here!

Information Kayla D. would like to know about your pet

All I would like to know is if your dog has any medication needs or special issues to look out for. My favorite dog that I owned, Missi, had epilepsy and she would have seizures, so I'm very comfortable around dogs that might need a little more attention. I’m comfortable with giving medication; pills or injection is fine, I’ll follow your instructions.

A typical day

I have plenty of time in my days to play outside with your pet! My own dog loves fetch, which basically means I’m a professional tennis ball thrower! I also have no problem taking pups on longer walks, especially with higher energy dogs I find it helps them settle down and go to sleep at the end of the day. One of my favorite hobbies is buying dog toys because it makes me happy to watch dogs play with new toys.

Availability

I’m currently a stay-at-home mom so I have plenty of time to care for boarding, daycare, drops in and more. I typically reserve a week for house sitting clients and don’t take other clients during that time. Military housing clients are prioritized as they are closer to me. Thank you for your understanding and for giving me as much detail about your dogs stay/needs as possible. I do try to pick up a few clients a week.
