Veterinary student & CVA II

Pet care experience

I am a Certified Veterinary Assistant with 8 years of husbandry and medical experience with companion and livestock animals. I have assisted in training a service dog and have been responsible for both family and roommate’s cats and dogs. I can identify abnormal behaviors in pets and understand natural behaviors of different breeds. Because of my training and experience as a vet tech, I can provide support to both young, old, or rehabilitating pets, as well. If an accident or emergency happens, I will be able to immediately help your pet to the best of my abilities until professional care can be administered. Hopefully, none of my medical skills would be required and I can instead provide a happy and safe experience for your pet!

Safety, trust & environment

After training puppies, I know how important it is to provide your pet with a routine that makes them feel secure. I have experience with crate/kennel training and I am comfortable following instruction on how you would like your pet to be cared for in your absence. My own dogs are generally not allowed on furniture, but I don’t mind if yours are! Especially during the summer, it is important to me that all animals have fresh, clean water and shade to avoid heat stroke if your dogs spend their days outside. I also know the struggle of maintaining your home with indoor pets when you live a busy lifestyle. It is important to me that your dog has plenty opportunity to go to the bathroom during the day and I have no problem cleaning up any accidents, especially for young puppies. You can trust that I would care for your baby as if he/she were my own! Just let me know how I can best provide for your pet and you can trust me to follow instructions on their care.

Information Kayla J. would like to know about your pet

Please let me know if your dog is on any medications for drop-by visits or if they have any physical restrictions or limitations when we go on walks. Also, help make me aware of any behaviors I should know about and if you are working on training I should reinforce. I have a wealth of knowledge on behavioral indicators that will alert me to avoid situations, but knowing more about your dog’s experience with socialization or distractions (squirrel!) will help me ensure safety and fun on our walks! If there is anything else you think I should know, please don’t hesitate to reach out! I am here to work with you however I can so that both you and your pet are comfortable in our time together.

A typical day

As a former softball player, I love throwing a ball around or tossing a frisbee for your dog! When I drop by, I’ll make sure your pet has plenty of exercise and attention. One of my favorite games to play with my own dogs is hide and seek. It is very mentally stimulating and I love watching them figure out the hiding spots! For walks, I like taking them to the park where they can encounter all sorts of new smells. I can also take them to the dog park, like the one near the Abilene Zoo, for fun times with furry friends!
