Experienced Animal Lover

Pet care experience

This past May, I completed my undergraduate degree at Duke. I do Rover work in my free time - something I thoroughly enjoy - as working with animals is one of my passions! Growing up in rural NC, I learned to care for both farm animals and house pets from a very young age. I began fostering stray animals when I was five and haven't stopped caring for animals since. From hatching and raising game birds (chicken and quail) to working with horses to nursing orphaned goats, I've done it all. I'm so grateful to have been working with Rover for four years now. In that time, I've cared for all kinds of animals, from your regular Spot and Fluffy to a whole menagerie complete with ducks, geese, chickens, deer, cats, and many other forms of wildlife. I have extensive experience with geriatric pups/cats who need extra love and care (and medicines such as oral pills, insulin shots, etc). I also have experience with untrained puppies, dogs/cats who suffer from anxiety, and animals with a history of abuse. No matter their quirks, I promise to love and care for your fur baby as if it were my own! Important note for prospective house sitting clients: I have a service dog in training. I bring my pup with me for overnights. He comes with me pretty much everywhere I go, so he will not be left alone in your house. If I do leave him behind, he is crated.

An absolutely wonderful experience! Kayla brought her sweet, well-behaved, assistance dog-in-training with her, which was fabulous for our young puppy! Highly recommended!

Kayla is one of the best cat sitters we've ever had. This was our first time finding a sitter through a pet sitting service like Rover, and Kayla made it easy for us to understand all the aspects of utilizing a service. Thanks to Kayla, we were able to relax and enjoy our vacation, and we loved seeing the little visit summary cards and photos from her! What an unexpected treat that was! She took the time to learn all the details for our feline fur babies, and she was great with all the very specific (and unusual) instructions. When we arrived home, our cats were happy, relaxed, and we didn't even get the "cat cold shoulder" (which means that our cats weren't angry at us for leaving them, which is a sure sign of a top-notch sitter). We look forward to booking Kayla as our cat sitter again in the future!

Kayla took great care of our Maggie and kept us updated throughout the stay. We appreciated her communication and the care she provided.

Boarding: ***If your pet has disordered bathroom behaviors (i.e. nervous urination, accidents in the house, etc), please board them elsewhere*** I will do my absolute best to make sure your fur baby feels safe and comfortable in my home. All I ask is that you let me know all of your pets' needs (and quirks) ahead of time so that I can be prepared. Please let me know UP FRONT about any resource guarding issues, disordered behaviors, or any history of abuse. If boarding a puppy, please make sure they are house-trained. House Sitting: Your house, your pet, your rules! Let me know what your pet(s) need to keep them safe and happy, and I'll do just that. If your pup needs crating at night or when home alone, no problem. If your animals have resource guarding issues and need separating while they're eating, I've got you covered. Just let me know how I can best make them comfortable while you're away.

Information Kayla S. would like to know about your pet

***If your animal doesn't do well with other dogs, please do not contact me for house sitting (overnights). I'm more than happy to do drop-ins, though.*** If your dog bites — humans or other animals — please let me know ahead of time. If your dog isn’t crate trained and is known to be destructive, please book elsewhere. Please be up front about any resource aggression (attacking other animals/humans over food, water, toys, affection, etc). Resource aggression issues are NOT dealbreakers however I need to know about them UP FRONT so I can take proper precautions to protect me and my dog. Any history of abuse is good to know about, particularly for rescue dogs. Some behaviors (resulting from past abuse) may present for the first time while the owner is away from home. In that case, I'd like to be as prepared as possible.

A typical day

I'd love to take your dog on a walk/run at our local park, Forest Hills Park. Sometimes (especially on rainy days) I like to put on a Youtube video made for dogs/cats featuring birds, squirrels, and the like. I also have plenty of fun toys and treats to share. If your dog has any favorite treats, activities, toys, games, etc. please let me know! I'd love to treat your furry baby and make them feel comfortable as best I can. I'm fairly active, so our furry friends are never bored :)

Rover is currently my full-time job, so I spend the majority of my week caring for different animals. My schedule is pretty flexible. For house sitting, I may need to be away for several hours at the time while I'm in class or in meetings. For dog walks/drop-ins, morning through early afternoon works best.
