Pet care experience
I've had dogs in my life since I was a child, but have had my own since I was a young mother. I've always felt that training was one of the most important and compassionate things I could do for my dogs. They know what's expected, and life is easier for everyone. Early on I learned that positive reinforcement training is the only way to go, and I've used that for dogs and horses. Since training is so important to me, I can help train your dog while I'm sitting. Are you on a farm? No problem. I've bred and raised horses, dairy goats, cats, and various kinds of fowl, as well as owning and training dogs.

I have a 9 year old Sheltie who is very laid back with other dogs. I also have a medium size crate if needed. Though l don't let animals on my furniture, if I'm at a client's house, that is their call. PLEASE, if I'm boarding your dog and s/he is used to getting on the furniture, bring a crate. And please don't bring a dog that has fleas. I hate to have to mention it, but I've had to flea bomb my house in the past because a boarder brought them. My dog is fed once a day in the evening, but clients' dogs are fed as often as the client requires. I will not leave food down for "grazing". After 15 minutes, the food is picked up to avoid resource guarding. It's amazing how quickly dogs learn that food is to be eaten as a meal and not a snack!

Resource guarding can be a real problem with some dogs. Please let me know if your dog fits this description, and what kind of resource guarding--food, people, toys...
A typical day
I often go to the dog park. The local one here in Belfast, Maine, has two areas: one for large dogs, one for smaller dogs. In my fenced yard, we can also play ball, or we can play games or go for walks.

I have a fence around my yard and a doggy exit so dogs can come in and go out at will. As a rule, I will accept overnight stays on Saturday but because I'm gone most of Sunday morning, I prefer that boarders be picked up by 9:00 a.m. I will make exceptions depending on the dog and the circumstances.
