Gentle, polite, dedicated dog-lover

Pet care experience

I have grown up around dogs my entire life but I have only ever owned one on my on. I rescued him from a kill shelter that he was abandoned at twice. After I was discharged from the military I bought an RV for my dog and I, and we traveled around the states. I wanted to give him a good life and dropped as much as I could to make that happen. When he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer I put everything else on hold. I leased an apartment close to his veterinarian and paid to try every non-invasive treatment that was available to try to give him some quality of life. He was my entire focus up to and even after his death, I am heartbroken without him. I dedicated a decade to my dog and I still wish I had done more. I can talk your ear off about him but I believe the best thing for me to do is share some of my time and love with animals in need. I understand wholeheartedly the special bond a person can have with their dog. It's never "just a dog" to me and I assure you they will be in loving hands. I am medically retired military and have only recently recovered enough from my dog's death to function properly again. I am between jobs but spend some time volunteering at an animal shelter. I have plenty of time otherwise and will try to work around your schedule. I currently rent a studio in a complex that has a few areas to walk a leashed dog. There is not much space inside the studio but I do not crate so they would have free roam in the small space. It is climate controlled and sits at a stable 67F with constant access to running water from a 3gallon carbon filtered pet fountain. I often have quiet television shows, ASMR or Lo-Fi music playing so there will be minimal audio disturbances. They would have short but frequent walks outside around the neighborhood, weather permitting. It would be ideal for a couch-potato or senior dog. In a client's home I would require written/typed instructions on how to proceed in the best way so as not to interrupt your dog's daily schedule. I will follow the instructions to the best of my ability and for anything not specifically outlined I will use my best judgement for the wellbeing of your dog. You dog should be up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped if leashed walks are requested. Please be sure to disclose any behavioral issues. I will not provide services for any animal deemed to be violent or aggressive. I will not under any circumstances use choke/shock/inhumane collars of any kind and will not provide any services to an owner who uses these items. I prefer normal leashes over adjustable ones for the safety of your dog but will use an adjustable leash if provided and requested. I will always wear a mask in your home or when interacting with you for everyone's safety. Your dog's health and safety is my primary concern. As such I will immediately report any observed mistreatment or animal abuse to the proper authorities.

In the 20 years I have known Joe, he's always been kind and caring to animals. He's also helped foster pets in the past. Having seen how he cares for his animals, I would absolutely recommend him to care for someone's dog!

Information Joseph D. would like to know about your pet

I know pits, rotties, huskies etc. get a bad rap but I am willing to work with any breed so long as the individual has not displayed any aggressive behavior. Anything that resulted in an attack against a human or another dog will be declined unless there is overwhelming circumstantial evidence that suggests the dog was only defending itself against an aggressor. I can handle a dog up to 80 pounds comfortably, but am willing to make certain exceptions up to about 100 pounds. All dogs should be spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped. If your dog has any special needs or medications please disclose this information beforehand. I am willing to administer oral or small doses of injected medications provided the medications are dosed out beforehand by the owner. I will do my best to accommodate reasonable requests within the scope of dog-sitting. Owners are expected to provide appropriate food, treats, toys and handling equipment for their animals. Please disclose any dietary concerns. I am willing to prepare small meals as requested if provided the materials. I will not work with anyone who insists on attempting to force their dog into a vegan or vegetarian diet.

A typical day

I like to walk around my neighborhood area, its rather quiet and safe. There is also a ballpark I liked to take my dog to that has a small creek and is usually empty of people. If your dog is playful and likes games there are some fenced areas they can romp and fetch. If you dog has limited mobility I don't mind taking them on a slow drive with the windows down in a nice place. If I am doing a drop-in or dog-walk from your home I can take your dog on whatever your prescribed standard route is so they will be in a familiar area to reduce anxiety. I am also willing to travel small amounts to take them to their favorite nearby areas as well if they are tolerant of car rides. Senior dogs or those with limited mobility can be taken on longer, slower drives with the windows down so they can take in the new smells.
