The human that Dogs love

Pet care experience

My love affair with dogs began with Pat and Pam, my family’s 2 Terriers, who had two very contrasting and colorful personalities. I was taught how to groom, feed and train my dogs by my grandfather, who bred and trained Great Danes. I learned the different temperaments of dog breeds and learned that every dog has their own distinctive personality. I began breeding and training Cocker Spaniels in 2006, and boast to this day of never loosing a puppy. I like to think of dogs as “little people” who reflect the personality and humanity of their owners. Being a native New Yorker, I have been dog/house sitting for over 30 years, with a list of satisfied clients. I can do bathing and basic grooming. My winning point is that I am the type your dog will feel comfortable boding with quickly.

John V. is excellent! I had no concerns leaving my fur-boys in his care. He is knowledgeable in the care of dogs, walked both dogs, one puppy with no obedience training and the other over weight. I appreciated his doing so and especially on giving me tips on how to work with weight loss for the older dog and basic commands with the pup before I get him into obedience training. The dogs too were happy with John V and we all are looking forward to his next stay in June. Thank you Rover for sitters like John V.

I met John right after he moved to Texas in 2006. I was on staff at Antioch Baptist Church and I knew that he was a dog lover when one day I had to go to the Music and Fine Arts wing. And there was a beautiful brown cocker spaniel puppy sitting in his lap in the office. After our meeting, I took him home so he could drop the dog off and we could go eat. When I got to the house, he had someone waiting to take care of Briana while we were away. He said that his puppy was too young to leave locked up in her kennel for too long. We finished eating and headed back to the church because he had choir rehearsal. When we got to the church, the sitter had brought the puppy and John turned his puppy to a couple of teenagers who kept him while he rehearsed. I have had the opportunity of visiting his home once he started his Cocker breeding business and although he had 4 dogs, they were well behaved and well socialized. His care and guidance of his dogs was well organized and efficient. He was a likely choice of a person to ask to house sit my 3 toy poodles when my wife and I had to leave town on emergency. We were unable to let him meet our dogs before leaving town, we only had time to leave the key for him and basic instructions. When we returned, it was comforting to see him in the front yard playing with the dogs when we pulled up. Our dogs were happy to see us, but quickly ran back to the yard to finish their play time. He has a genuine love for dogs and his bond with my dogs last to this day.

Information John V. would like to know about your pet

Just like taking care of a child, I like to hear their likes, dislikes, medical issues, eating schedule and character flaws. Or they spoiled? Or they the “cut-up” or the serious and loner type? I don’t have a breed preference but I tend to shy away from the stubborn and dominant types.

A typical day

For me, dog sitting is just like hanging out with a new acquaintance or an old friend. Where I go, my dog goes as well, if at all possible. I have take my dog often to the track with me. They enjoy the outing and the exercise. And if a dog is well socialized, I enjoy playing at the dog park. Playtime and relaxing time is planned and sometimes spontaneous. And if we’re really vibing, and it’s allowed, then we just might sleep side by side.
