Pet care experience
I have over 20 years of experience caring for animals and have owned a variety of dogs, from a pure-bred Golden Retriever and Springer Spaniel to a St. Bernard breed, German Shepherd breed, and two different Pit Bull breeds. My partner AJ and I are hoping to begin travelling in a few years, so owning a dog isn't in the cards right now. But my love for dogs is unparalleled, and I'd love to welcome yours into our warm and loving home. They'll be in very good hands, and get double the attention :)
Reviews
John was so accommodating with our dog, Griffin! He agreed to our last minute request for a reservation and even agreed to provide the necessary medical attention to our recently injured dog - this was above and beyond expectations. It took a huge weight off our shoulders knowing someone could give him the care he needed while we had to go into work. Griffin was walked numerous times each day and we could tell by how worn out he was! We received numerous pictures throughout the three days and really appreciated that. By day two, Griffin already knew where he was going the second we pulled on their street and he was so happy to go see them! 100% would recommend his services and we would look to use him in the future.
John has been a lifesaver for us multiple times now. He’s gone out of his way to be available for taking care of Geronimo when we’ve been in a bind, and it’s clear that Geronimo has a great time with him. Geronimo is also dog reactive and really strong, so it’s important to me to know that a sitter can manage that and keep him safe, and I have zero worries with John. He sends regular updates and pictures without having to be asked every time, and that’s HUGE for me. So many sitters don’t do that, and it’s really important to me. Of all the sitters we’ve used, John has put us the most at ease and demonstrated that he really cares about our pup. Geronimo loves him, is always excited to see him, and always comes home happy.
I’ve procrastinated reviewing John and Amber because they are our best kept secret. Well, secret is out. These two are outstanding muggles for our wheaten wizard Gryffin. When we bring her to John and Amber, she cannot fly out of the car fast enough to greet them. Upon return, she is excited to see us but her unconditional love extends to them so she bounces back and forth, reveling in all the belly rubs!! We left our pup with them for 10+ days without hesitation. They send photo updates with the best captions!! They are prompt with responses and flexible when plans go awry. They truly are Gryffin’s favorite muggle (human) couple!
Great stay! Our pups loved them.

Information John S. would like to know about your pet
I would want to know what your dog's day-to-day looks like so that they'll be comfortable in the new setting. Knowing what commands they respond to is great as well, and also, I'd like to know what their favorite games are. For example, I've met some pet owners who believe a little tug of war instills aggressive habits in a dog and are against it, but other pet owners who are totally fine with it. So your personal preferences on how we should interact with your dog is absolutely essential. And of course, their eating habits, sleeping habits, and potty break habits are all necessary as well. Basically, I want to know everything you can tell me so that your dog feels right at home, and you have peace of mind while you're away. As far as breed or size preferences, I don't discriminate. However, our apartment is only a two bedroom, so while it's not tiny, it's not incredibly open or spacious either. If you have an enormous Great Dane or something, they might feel a little cramped. But of course, that also depends on what they're used to. Honestly, I love all dogs. That may sound cliche, but it's true. I can't say that I've ever met a dog I didn't like or get along with. Every dog has a unique personality and I find them all fascinating, and incredibly entertaining. I grew up with a big pure bred Golden Retriever, but I've also cared for several different pit bull breeds throughout my life as well, and I've been around countless other breeds through friends and family. Pit bulls are probably my favorite breed. I feel bad that they get such a bad rap, when often they're the absolute sweetest dogs you will ever meet. In my opinion, it all comes down to the owner - how they train the dog and how much care and love the dog receives.
A typical day
We live in the Logan Square neighborhood which is incredibly dog friendly. We have a newly renovated dog park just a mile away that is completely fenced in, so if your dog prefers open space to run crazy, we'll be happy to bring them there. We also have a small fenced in area in front of our apartment building for more supervised playtime outside. My partner AJ and I are freelance writers full time and work from home, and we take several walks throughout the day regardless to keep our backs from hurting and get the blood flowing. So if your dog likes to get out of the house often, he or she will fit right in!
