I would like to know if they are leash trained, food aggressive (doesn't want people near food bowl while eating, just so I can be prepared), and how friendly they are towards strangers or if it takes them a while to open up to people. I have a soft spot for (and more experience with) retrievers, especially Labradors and Goldens; however, I love being around all kinds of dogs.

Depends on owners preference --- will walk around neighborhood if preferred or if the dog is okay with a short car ride and likes to walk on trails, I am more than happy to take them to walk in a forest preserve. I'm also happy just staying at the owners home and playing fetch with the dog, or see if they know any cool tricks!
