I try to really stick to routines that the pets are used to! This tends to make the time you are away a bit easier on our friends. I have 20 years experience with owning dogs and 12+ years experience training working (patrol work) dogs and pets and owners! All of this experience has taught me that dogs and the people they own just want comfort, peace of mind, and most of all, FUN!!! From the high energy pup to the well-matured fine elders, their needs (and wants!) will be provided according to the pet parent. A game of Chuck-It is never out of the question, extra snacks for good behavior (or improving training issues while you are away), and formal training while you travel!
