Vacation Care for Senior Dogs

Pet care experience

I am a volunteer with Hearts United for Animals, a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary; and I currently foster a three-legged Silky Terrier, a blind Yorkie, and a Yorkie diagnosed with a heart problem. Before the Covid-19 problem that caused airlines to cancel flights of dogs to their new homes, I would take dogs to the airport. At last count, I had had over 536 dogs in my home over the last 20 years. I often take special needs dogs from the shelter to help them adjust after being rescued from abusive puppy mills. Because dogs are pack animals, they all get along well. I live in a large house in a quiet neighborhood with a fenced-in yard. I supervise dogs at all times when they are outside. There are no children in my home so the home is quiet except for soft music. I am retired so I am home most of the time--only away for short periods. I have a home security system. I have some special-needs dogs that require daily medications and/or injections. I feed the dogs twice a day with healthy dog food that contains no additives, no animal by-products, and no grain. I offer dog food with 4 or 5 star rating. Fresh water is always available. Sometimes owners bring special food and meds for their dogs. I supervise meals so that dogs do not share. Thus each dog gets the right amount of food with meds if prescribed. I can do injections when prescribed by the owner's vet. I often put any pills in a bit of liverwurst--dogs consider that a treat. Some liquid medicine can be injected into the food. I have file folders for each boarder so I know what is required for care of each one. I have several repeat boarders so it is helpful to keep details on each dog for reference. I have a variety of dog beds and a kuranda so the dogs can choose a comfortable place for daytime naps and nightly sleep. I have a Snoozer that all dogs enjoy, particularly the dachsies. I launder bedding and towels daily so that the dogs have fresh, clean sleeping quarters. I email owners daily about their pet(s) so they know how they are enjoying the stay. Because of the pandemic concerns, I do not allow owners to come into my home with their children. I receive the owner and the dogs only at the door.

Buddy stayed with Jean for 2 weeks. She spoiled him so much I felt guilty picking him up. He got to spend his days snuggling with Jean on the couch. At home he is home alone during the day.

A typical day

Dogs rule! In my family room, I have numerous dog beds with fluffy towels that I wash daily and spray with lavender. I read, use my laptop, or watch TV in the family room so I am with the dogs much of the time. Because most of my dogs are seniors or special-needs, they do not care for playing fetch with tennis balls. When I do have a more lively dog guest, I play fetch. Often the dogs like to run about the yard chasing one another. I feed the dogs twice a day in individual bowls. Fresh water is available at all times. I take the dogs outside into my large fenced-in yard first thing in the morning, after meals, and before bedtime. I also have a couple of dogs that are potty trained and so bark to go outside to do their business. The others follow. I supervise all outings and do Poop Patrol twice a day. I also allow dogs to walk or play in the yard when the weather is pleasant. Dogs enjoy barking at squirrels in the trees. Some enjoy playing with tennis balls.
