Estab 2003, Home F/T, Slow Paced

Pet care experience

In business since 2003, we provide socialized boarding which is best suited for SMALL DOGS and some OLDER DOGS of Moderate to Lower Energy Levels. Your dog will love our ranch with a "zen" country feel, but city close in the Harmony Grove area of West Escondido! The number of dogs we take is limited to 6, so we can provide your dog(s) with a quality stay! All doggy guests get to play outside in our 2 fenced play yards, or hangout inside our home...the choice is theirs! Our home is set up to cater to your dog’s comfort with many cozy dog beds and couches. Additionally, there is no access to our kitchen or front exterior door, ensuring your pup has a safe and PAWtastic time here with us. Are We A Good Fit For YOUR Dog? We accept small dogs and occasional elderly dogs of MODERATE TO LOWER energy levels. All dogs must be interviewed prior to acceptance. Proof of current shots as well as be on a Flea/Tick program must be presented in order to stay. All guest dogs accepted must be able to live peacefully with other dogs, be non-aggressive, and be potty trained. Most dogs are social creatures and like to play with other dogs, but many dogs can get overwhelmed with too many dogs and too much play. Our place is best for dogs of Moderate to Lower Energy Levels. All dogs MUST be able to coexist appropriately in a group of dogs. Small/Toy breeds have a separate play yard since they can get easily hurt. Senior dogs are welcome! We can not accept dogs over 35-lbs, or those who dig or climb fences, who may continually bark or whine, or who may not have general good manners. We are not trainers and only provide accommodations for pets that are well socialized. We suggest you may want to work with a trainer to correct unwanted behaviors prior to coming to stay with us. Dogs that are NOT a good fit for us may include: • dogs over 35ish lbs • dogs that don't fare well in a group setting, • dogs that are high energy level, • dogs that have no basic training or recall skills, • dogs that are destructive chewers • dogs that cry or whine continuously • dogs who constantly "mark" their area • puppies under 1 year old Their needs are greater than we can provide for here, as this is our home and not a commercial kennel. This is what we do full time, cater to your dog 24/7. Your dog will not be left at home for more than a few hours unattended (ie: run to the grocery store or doing horse chores in the front yard). • We have NO children or cats. • I have been a professional pet sitter since 2003 and this is my only job…to care for your fur-babies! And my husband, Bill, helps too. Dogs MUST be able to live peacefully with other dogs in a group environment. Proof of current shots, as well as on a regular flea program are required. Dogs who are considered for boarding MUST be interviewed prior to acceptance with a complimentary Meet & Greet. For safety reasons, we are NOT set up to accept "last minute" dogs without a prior Meet & Greet Evaluation. WE DO NOT TAKE dogs under 1 year old, dogs that are not spayed/neutered, dogs that are high energy and need to run a lot, dogs that continually bark, cry and/or whine, or dogs that dig and/or jump fences, as their needs are greater than we can provide for. About this sitter: We "officially" began in January 2003. Owners Janean and Bill Huston own a small ranch in the unincorporated west end of Escondido, an area known as Harmony Grove/Eden Valley. They share their home with 2 dogs, and 14 horses (it's an addiction!), and Janean's mom lives there too. Bill and Janean met at the MCAS Miramar Horse Stables where they previously boarded their horses. Both where raised with animals, each bringing 45+++ years of animal expertise to the business. Our team at Hounds To Horses consists of reliable, loving, and experienced Pet Care Providers! Meet the team: >> Janean (Owner) is a graduate from San Diego State University, and worked in sales & marketing most of her "corporate" life. As Janean departed from a career as a Radio Marketing Executive, she turned her energies to her passion for animals, founding her pet sitting business in 2003. She's attended a Pet First Aid class held at the Escondido Humane Society in January 2005. Janean recently was the Co-President of the House Corporation, which runs the Kappa Delta sorority house at SDSU, and in 2008 was the first "Non-Pro" Rider ever to be elected to the So CA Horseshow Association (SCPHA) Board of Directors. Additionally, she can often be found at a wide variety of meetings with the goal of maintaining a rural environment in her community. >> Bill (Co-owner) was raised on 80-acres in Montana. After retiring with his 20-year from the U.S. Marine Corps at MCAS Miramar, he worked at a Project Manager for a local construction contractor and then was the Assistant Stable Manager at the 44-acre stable located at MCAS Miramar until it's recent closure. Now he is the Maintenance Division at at our ranch! In his spare time, Bill shows our horses on the Quarter Horse and local Open Show circuits. Hounds To Horses takes pride in its reputation for superior care for your pets since 2003. This is what we do full-time...not just a side gig! We even carry Liability Insurance which covers your pet for YOUR protection to make sure everyone has a PAWtastic stay. Why I love dog sitting :-) Founded Hounds To Horses in 2003, and have been playing with dogs (and other assorted pets) every day since! Meet my pets: We have 14 horses in our front yard. Our 1-acre backyard is reserved for the dogs! Our dogs: Julia is a lab/corgi mix which we fostered from Friends of Labs Rescue…and became a “foster failure” as we ended up keeping her. RK is a chihuahua mix who we found on the street. In addition, my 80+ yr old mom lives with us, providing an extra lap for doggy TLC. Location: We are located West of Hwy 15, South of Hwy 78, and North of Del Dios Hwy in a rural area of West Escondido referred to as the Eden Valley/Harmony Grove area. We are centrally located with easy access from anywhere in North County. Our ranch is down a private easement with only 2 neighbors around us. Great country atmosphere, yet city close! In an effort to "get a life" our Hours of Operation are by Appointment Only: Mon, Wed, Fri 8:30am-10am & 4:30pm-6:00pm Tue, Thur, Sat 8:30am-10am & 3:30pm-6:00pm Sundays we are CLOSED until 4:30pm-7:00pm

Janean was great and her dog yard was so cute! ? our girl was surprisingly playing with the pack and appeared to have fun. We’ll definitely reserve Janean’s service in the future when in the area.

We have booked several times with Janean, and each time Mulder enjoyed his stay at Janean's Holiday Camp. This time we boarded his new brother, and both had a great time. They fit right in with whatever pack is present at the time and Janean keeps a watchful eye that all are happy and comfortable. We received pictures and updates throughout their stay, and they came home healthy, happy, and exhausted from playing with new friends. We will definitely continue using Janean for future stays.

We have 2 fenced dog play yards, one dedicated specifically to smaller dogs. Our home is set up to cater to your dogs needs! We can NOT ACCEPT DOGS over 35 pounds, or high-energy dogs. Although we work from home, we do have to run errands, grocery shop, etc. so there are occasional times when the gang must be left alone. During these times, we typically give each dog a buddy, and they are left in separate areas INSIDE our home, with no outdoor access.

A typical day

No walks needed here! Dogs get plenty of exercise as we have 3 dog play yards. Our "natural terrain" backyard is like a doggy play ground! Checkout our pictures here on this site. Your dog's sleeping arrangement All dogs sleep inside our home at night. We ask that you provide your dogs own food as it keeps him/her more “regular” and consistent. You may also bring your dog’s favorite bed/blanket to snuggle with, as it gives them a "scent" from home. Time I'll spend with your dog Each day varies depending on the dogs, but this is is our full time job. Most of the day we hang out and play, with an occasional nap in the sun. The dogs tend to hang out in my office while I do paper work, or follow me to the bathroom. They do not have access to our kitchen area.
