I grew up around two dogs, Candy and Sadie. Sadie was patient and sweet; Candy was a snarling nightmare. I learned early that a bond with a dog can change me. I was fortunate to be around humans that loved their pets. I watched my WWII era grandfather walk down the block twice a day to hose off a sweet dog chained to a neighbor's tree in the dead heat of summer. Finally, he cut the chain off the dog and brought him home to us with the name of Buddy. Buddy taught me to be resilient and forgiving. When I have to leave my own dogs in the care of others, especially strangers, I want to know they have a true animal lover's heart. I have this kind of heart.
