Retired consultant w/time for dogs

Pet care experience

I'm a retired professional who will devote a lot of time to your dog. My husband also works from home three weeks a month, so your dog will seldom be alone. My "heart wrapped in fur" is a 19 month old Briard, an ancient french breed of sheepdog. In the past 17 months, I've worked hard to socialize her (with both people and dogs). She's earned conformation points, as well as titles in lure coursing, rally (high scores qualified her for Nationals) and obedience. We also do dock diving, barn hunt, and - of course - sheep herding. Once she is two years old, we'll start agility training. As a medium/young dog, we are a good fit for more athletic and playful dog guests. If you have an older or inactive dog, we may not be a suitable sitter. (Or course, if I'm visiting your home or walking your dog, this would not apply as my dog would be left at my home or in the car.) I'm a member of Briard Club of America, treasurer of Michigan Ohio Briard Club, and member of Toledo Kennel Club, where we attend several classes each week. The TKC members are incredibly helpful in everything related to dog training, nutrition, health, and so on. My training philosophy emphasizes positive reinforcement training. My favorite trainers are Kyra Sundance (teaching tricks is so fun for our dogs) and Pat Miller. I've been a customer of Highpoint Animal Clinic since 1997 - and they are only 3 miles away.

Information Jacqueline C. would like to know about your pet

I'll want to know your dog's medical background, feeding routine, training that he / she has received as well as what you expect of your dog. I'll especially want to know about any problem behaviors (poor recall, resource guarding, and so on) and how you are working to correct them so I can reinforce your training program. I'm more familiar with the working / herding breeds (in the past I've owned Dobermans and Akitas, and now own a Briard) but I do not have a breed preference. My dog is an intact female so there will be two months each year (typically late Dec/early Jan and July) when I will be only be able to accept female dogs and neutered male dogs in my home.

A typical day

Walks can be off leash in my fenced acre pasture, or on leash on the trails in 4,000 acre Oak Openings Metropark which is my "backyard." If your dog enjoys swimming, I have a pond and can also take your dog to the dock diving pool at NW Ohio Dock Dogs. Your dog can also join me in Barn Hunt or obedience/rally training sessions depending on the timing of your pet's visit. When the weather turns bad (cold, raining or snowing), we head to my large unfinished basement which I've turned into a dog training and play room. Rest is important for all dogs, especially puppies, so there will also be nap times.
