Pet care experience
Before adopting my own dog, I dog sat for four years. My clients ranged from small Terriers to large Rottweilers. Some clients preferred I stay in their homes while others let me keep their dog at my apartment. One client gave me her garage code and let me come whenever I wanted to take her yellow lab for runs with me while I was training for my 4th half marathon. I love running and if the dog is capable I still enjoy taking dogs with me on my runs. When I am not playing with dogs, I work part time at NC State's Veterinary School as a basic science researcher. My knowledge of animal behavior stems from working with trained veterinary professionals and with my own dog (Jessie) who is a Pit Bull mix with separation anxiety. I know and use positive reinforcement to train my dog and believe in positive behavior direction instead of negative correction (when needed). I have experience working with difficult dogs and extremely easygoing dogs. I adapt my interaction with each dog based on the owner's expectations and needs of the dog. For example, I watch one of my co-workers dogs who is occasionally aggressive towards new people and dogs. Her dog has never shown aggression towards me, however when we go for walks I try to set him up for success by ensuring we are within a safe distance from other people and/or dogs that might trigger unwanted behavior. Being mindful of her dog's triggers makes the walk more enjoyable for both of us. Furthermore, my dog Jessie is leash reactive so I have training and skills to work with that behavior as well. Speaking of my dog... Jessie and I go on car rides to various parks in the triangle area as well as visit dog parks. She loves belly rubs, playing fetch and snuggling next to mom on the couch after a long run. She gives kisses freely (classic Pit Bull) and needs constant reassurance that mom is by her side. I love my dog and hope to share that love with other dogs who might need extra attention while their owners are away.
Reviews
My dog and cat love Gwen! She has watched them several times when I am out of time. She is very good about sending photos and text updates so I do not worry when I am away. I would highly recommend her to other pet parents!
My Dooley LOVES going to see Gwen or when she comes to stay with him. Gwen is a true dog lover and is a very attentive and dependable care giver, and she genuinely enjoys spending quality time with her canine clientele. She is also a very respectful house guest. I highly recommend hiring Gwen if you want to have a worry-free trip away from your pups.
Gwen has dog sat for us for 4 years. Our dogs love her. She is trustworthy and reliable. Our dog pouts when she leaves!! she has stayed in our home during vacations and treats our dogs like her own.
