I currently have three cats - Richard Parker, Rigby, and Redbeard. In my lifetime, I’ve owned and loved a variety of different pets, including a dog, rabbits, a bird, hamsters, and countless fish! Almost all my pets have been adopted from shelters like the Humane Society. I am very acquainted with animals with special needs because of such. Our family dog Tau (11/22/07-06/10/23) was rescued by Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) from her previous owner who was abusive. She spent 9 months in foster care before she came home with us. The reason for being in foster care was that she was recovering from hip surgery, which the HSHV did to correct an old hip injury that was left untreated and never healed properly (most likely from being physically abused by her previous owner, a man). Because of such, she has had lifelong anxiety issues, as well as an aversion to men. I've also taken a psychology course in college from which I learned operative condition, in application to teaching pets tricks. I have since taught Tau (on top of the standard "sit" command) "lie down" "shake" "other paw" "roll over" "circle" and the crowd favorite "play dead" in which if you make a finger gun and say "pew!" (like a silencer), she'll immediately flop over onto her side. I always thought I was a dog person, until I adopted my first cat Rizzo (10/15/2017-4/21/23). Now I definitely can say I am 100000% a cat person (although dogs do hold a special place in my heart). Rizzo, like Tau, also had special needs. She was born with congenital dysplasia and was blind her whole life, along with suffering from other genetic defects such as stomach and bowel issues. Tau joins Rizzo over the rainbow bridge Spring of 2023. Richard Parker is our COVID baby! We adopted him from Furry Friends Rescue Inc. He is definitely the sweetest boy ever; his foster mom said he was her favorite out of his litter and I can see why! Recently, we welcomed Rigby into our family after I got hit with a bout of kitten fever. We’re still getting to know him, but he seems to be bonding with his older brother!
