Pet care experience
As a dog owner of 30+ years, I am a passionate advocate for our loving, fuzzy family members. I enjoy spending time with dogs, learning about their psychology, and filling the gap between human and canine communication. Stressful jobs, family demands, and COVID-19 have made it challenging to ensure our pets get the love, exercise, and attention they deserve. And they don't just deserve it: They NEED it to thrive and to live long, healthy lives. I would love to help ease the burden you're likely feeling by providing loving, thorough, and informed care for your dog. WHY HIRE ME: I am fully vaccinated and am happy to wear a mask in your presence or home to ensure your comfort. I understand that many of our pets require additional care due to health issues or behavioral problems. I have experience and patience handling both, so you can rest assured that I can care for pets with special needs. I am comfortable administering medication, adhering to dietary restrictions, keeping your dog's routine as consistent as possible, or ensuring that your dog is never left alone (should they have separation anxiety). I have taken courses on administering first aid, "pack-walking" dogs for off-leash adventures, and the Training Between The Ears L1 course that teaches relaxation techniques to minimize dogs' behavioral issues. I have also been accepted at The Academy of Dog Trainers to become a Certified Dog Trainer. I will connect with you before we book to discuss your specific needs and situation. We will then schedule a meet-and-greet so that your dog can become comfortable with my face (and scent!) to minimize any fears your pup might have of strangers. This will also allow us to discuss your dog's specific needs, to ensure his or her safety and comfort under my care. My 9-year-old Swedish Vallhund, Malin, is my trusted companion, so your pet will have both human and canine interaction (unless otherwise requested). I am an advocate for your dog's physical and emotional wellbeing. During our time together, we will exercise, play, and work on relaxation techniques that can lead to positive changes long-term. Doing this involves positive reinforcement, compassion, understanding, and patience on my end. I do not believe in punishing, scolding, or causing physical or emotional harm to any animal or human. I live in Waitsfield, Vermont (near Sugarbush), but I often visit my family in Calais, Vermont. Therefore, I can service both areas.
Reviews
Emily is fantastic! She was so professional, reliable, flexible and most importantly amazing with animals.
Emily is one of those people who have an intuitive understanding of how a dog thinks, gained through many hours of practice and research. She creates a calm atmosphere that allows a dog to be a dog, while helping your pet through any issues it may have. I have seen her work with extremely anxious dogs and watched the transformation into a much more secure animal. I would not hesitate to have Emily take care of your pet.
Emily Mackenzie would be an excellent dog caregiver because she has trained dogs in her own home to have good manners and to feel safe and secure. She is well known for her reliability and punctuality. She is a hard worker who goes above and beyond a clients expectations. She gives people and animals dignity and respect.

Safety, trust & environment
Before booking, I will connect with you by phone to ask a few quick questions and set up a meet-and-greet time (no charge!) I like to build trust and communication from the start, and putting a face to my name so that your fur-baby feels safe and secure is of utmost importance. We will go over your dogs' needs, likes, dislikes, medical or behavioral issues. I will then provide as many (or as few) updates during our check-in, walk, or stay as you'd like! My 9-year-old Swedish Vallhund (30lbs) will accompany us on walks, daycare, drop-ins, or overnights unless otherwise requested. She is a herding breed and enjoys both people and dogs, so your dog will have a well-behaved playmate throughout their adventures with me. If I notice changes in your pet, I will mention them to you (such as a change in their poop, a sudden limp, if it looks like their nails need to be trimmed for safety, etc.).

A typical day
On a typical day, we'll begin with a potty break and any food or medication needs. Next, we'll head outside for a romp in the woods, by the stream, in a field - wherever path looks the most fun and inviting that day! We'll then come back for nap time. I like to do mild training and relaxation work before supper (should your dog require two meals a day). We'll then head back outside for a shorter walk and play. In the evening, we'll play games that offer mental stimulation. Throughout the day, we'll take potty breaks and reward dogs for good or relaxed behavior. Your dog will never be alone unless otherwise specified (I am committed to this, given that my pup has separation anxiety). We'll end our day with calming pets, snuggles, and happy dogs!
