WFH Dog Lovers W/ A Nice Backyard

Pet care experience

I have been a dog lover, and around pets of all kinds, since I can remember. My parents always said their first child was our Black Lab, Scooter, and then I came along. I was around many pets up until college, so learned a lot at an early age. In college, as a side hustle, I began taking care of the pets of friends and family when they were gone and have been doing so in some form or another until recently (COVID as well as moving put a halt to things). I have always loved having and being around dogs of all ages, sizes, and demeanors.

David and family are a nice family and seemed to enjoy having our dog stay with them. I believe our active dog was well taken care of with long walks and children to play with. We are traveling and if ever in the area again would definitely book thus family agsin.

Family seemed nice but wish there had been more communication with how the stay was going with our dog (e.g. more pics, videos). Also didn’t like that she was left alone in the garage for a period of time without supervision when she’s never had to be put away like that. We appreciated the exercise she got.

Safety, trust & environment

Pets in my home are treated as family members, rather than just guests. I know each individual will come with their own patterns, personalities, likes, and dislikes and I do my best to be accommodating to this while still making sure they get to be a part of my own day-to-day so they feel included and at home. I try to have some healthy snack options, should they not have their own and/or it’s acceptable by the owner, as well as a space that is ”theirs” (for their dog bed, cage, their comfort toys, etc). I know being in a new environment isn’t always the easiest experience, especially when away from the ones they love, so having a place that is “theirs/ and/or filled with reminders can be a great help. For pets I walk or visit, I try to keep a set pattern to help develop comfort and provide a stable environment they can adjust to, depend on, and be happy with. While it may be just a set time to pop-in/walk, it may include just sitting and playing for a bit, walking familiar routes, time together resting/drinking water afterward, etc. The idea is to not just be a part of their routine, but one they enjoy, can depend on, like, and look forward to.

Information David M. would like to know about your pet

The main thing I like to know about a dog is their personality. While some are very calm, collected, and enjoy slow days, others may be very energetic, playful, and outgoing. Simply knowing a dog in this manner helps us to bond with them better and know what will make them more comfortable in a new environment. I look at this very much in the same way that knowing how a person is would help you in connecting with them. I also like to get a feel for their usual pattern/schedule, to work as best to maintain it. Knowing any health conditions, issue, or special instructions is also key.

A typical day

Located in a suburban area just south of the city, my home is convenient for both house pets, the outdoorsy/active type, or any mix in between. For the active, one of the perks of my house is the nice size backyard in which playtime can be any time. It makes it rather convenient for random active/play sessions, some outdoor lazing around, or a quick zoomies release party. We are also in a fairly large and nice neighborhood which allows for plenty of safe walking areas away from much traffic, which includes some walking trails for those who prefer nature to suburbs. We also have a neighborhood dog park. For the more indoor loving pet guest, my nice size home allows for plenty of space to wander, to find your niche, or to follow me around and be right up under me. I try to provide plenty of toys healthy treats options, and plush places to sit and play (though bringing your pet guest favorites is highly recommended); all made better by my work schedule (I work from home which means all the love and attention any dog could want). So a typical day can be very flexible, dependent upon the needs of my pet guest.

I have been fortunate enough to work from home for quite some time in my career. While work does have its demands, this means I have ample opportunity to provide care and attention to those who are home with me, including any pet guest. I also tend to be an early riser and aim to get in my morning workout/active sessions, so am able to keep up with my more active pet guests who may require more walks, playtime, or active time. My wife also works from home, which provides an entire other human to play with, cuddle with or just seek attention from when your pet feels the need. This malleability of schedule and teamwork approach allows for us to accommodate any schedule your pet may be used to.
