I have a natural approach to dogs as if we already know each other. I talk to them--they trust the tone, my motion, gentile affection. I give them space, understand their apprehensions--I am patient. I tune into their emotional needs. I have a ten bedroom four thousand square foot home with a doggy door, fenced yard and seven other dogs and dog owners who all get along. It's a chilled environment; one more dog will not make a difference. We have a sign: "Dogs Welcome, People Tolerated", a very dog friendly environment. I am here 24/7 for the most part. If dog sitting, I would not leave the house. I already walk two dogs one to one and a half hours a day. It is basically a dog park in the yard, well behaved and calm indoors. They are loved and they know it.
