I love walking as much as dogs do!

Pet care experience

As a young child, it wasn't until after parade of fake stuffed dogs that my begging wore my parents down and they got me my first dog. In addition to feeding, training, walking, and caring for the dog completely by myself, I went on to frequently watch friends' dogs. Ever since moving to NYC, I have dog walked here and there, but have missed caring and connecting with dogs. I love all breeds and sizes.

DO NOT HIRE THIS PERSON! We left our dogs, Bella and Buster in the care of Caroline who seemed like a nice college student. However we were extremely disappointed with her care of our dogs and our house. I’ll start with our concerns with the dogs. They seem to have been minimally cared for. They seem to have been fed and walked. However we found evidence of some lack of care when we returned home. For example we found evidence that the dogs had chewed a number of things up, some that could have been potentially detrimental to their health or even fatal. We found parts of a pen casing that had been chewed up and several bits of plastic on the floor that hadn’t been cleaned up. We found a piece plastic bag that had been chewed on and left on the floor. We also found a bottle of face wash that had been chewed up in the trash, the cap and pump part which I discovered in the dogs bedding. Over the course of the 12 days we were gone it appears that our dogs were not given a single treat (aside from carrots on their walk) even though there were several stocked in the cabinet to use. While I didn’t give specifics on the distribution of treats she was aware of their existence and I would expect someone who is being paid to care for dogs would have enough sense to understand that. Lastly on this topic, there was evidence that she didn’t spend every night with our dogs which she was supposed to do. We found a large urine stain in the center of our bed. I would expect that someone who had been sleeping in the bed would have noticed a wet spot when they got in it. Let’s move on now to the care of the house. Aside from the bits of chewed up things we found there we’re at least 5 place where the dogs had urinated 2 of which were not cleaned up properly and 3 which were not cleaned at all. We found a large puddle in the bedroom, urine around the base of the toilet, which we will assume was from the dogs and the spot on the bed which I mentioned before which weren’t cleaned at all. We also discovered that the dogs had urinated on the bathroom mat and the kitchen mat which seem to have been small accidents or only partially cleaned up. We expect there to be accidents from time to time, but to have so many been completely ignored or not cleaned well is unacceptable. When we got home we found that the house had a bad smell. Upon examining the trash (which she hadn’t taken out once in 12 days) I discovered that she had thrown bags of dogs feces in the trash in our apartment. There was a small amount of damage done to a nightstand in the bedroom. A scratch and a bit of water damage that wasn’t there when we left. She also went in our kitchen cabinet and drank an unopened box of wine. I would be willing to not mention this because my instruction letter may have been misconstrued due to vague wording, except for the fact that she was willing to take a treat for herself while ignoring the treats for our dogs who she was being paid to care for. There were paper bags full of wrapping paper and boxes from her Christmas celebration which she hadn’t thrown away by the morning of the 31st when we returned. Last, and perhaps least but surely most tellingly, she didn’t pick up our mail which we specifically asked her to do a couple of times over the course of the 12 days. When asked if she had picked up the mail she responded that she “couldn’t” which is confusing to us since she had the key to the mailbox. Jeremy encouraged me to write to you first before I left a scathing review of her, to ask for advice on how to proceed. I would feel responsible if we didn’t discourage or even stop this person from caring for someone else’s dogs and her carelessness lead to their illness or death. We feel lucky that our dogs survived, angry that we paid so much for services which were subpar, mad at ourselves for not being more careful and disappointed that Rover would be represented by this person, though we have gotten good sitters from them before

Caroline took wonderful care of our boxer while we were away. She came over for a meet and greet before we left town, and I felt totally comfortable leaving our boy in her care. She took him on long walks and checked in with updates for us. We will absolutely contact Caroline next time we leave town. Thanks!!
