Vet student/trainer available!

Pet care experience

Hello! My name is Carolina, I am a student at the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine and dog trainer who loves bringing my passion and experience in the veterinary/animal behavior world into your home! In the past I have worked as a Veterinary Assistant in addition to being a private in home assistant for medically needy pets by working with veterinarians and owners to provide in home care. I provide pet sitting in your home, dog walking, medication administration and even basic training for dogs and puppies! As a veterinary technician I have had training and am comfortable doing tasks such as medicine administration, giving subcutaneous fluids and injections, taking temperature, heart rate, respiration rates and communicating with your medically needy pet's veterinarian to provide extra special care! I also have experience with humane, positive reinforcement based training and am willing to provide basic training and behavioral consultations for an additional fee. Why I love dog sitting My love affair with animals is documented as far back as 2nd grade when I brought home my graded notebook that clearly states that "I'm going to study hard so I can be a dog doctor"! I have since followed that route and have 3 years of experience in veterinary medicine as a veterinary assistant. I have been caring for the pets of friends and family since my early teens but have wanted to expand my passion for caring for people's animals in the past few years as I have gotten more training and experience with animals. My experience administering medication As a trained veterinary technician, I am comfortable administering oral and injected medications (ie: insulin). I simply require up to date prescriptions for medications that are not available OTC. I am also very happy to communicate with your veterinarian to create special care instructions for your medically needy pet! I am a student and am available almost all the time as my classes are mostly online. I do not have a "day job" so taking care of your animals is my top priority! I care for my client's pets by making them as comfortable as possible. My goal when sitting in your home is to stick to your pet's routine as closely as possible to minimize the stress of you being away. In addition, I have some rules that I follow with all my clients to keep everyone safe such as no being off leash unless in a secure fenced area, no meeting other animals unless they are from the same household and no interactions with strangers. This is not because I don't trust your pet, but because I can't know the type of day the other person or animal is having and don't want to risk a negative interaction.

Carolina stayed at our house for a week and did a wonderful job taking care of our "set in her ways" Cane Corso Mastiff, Penny. She was patient as can be with Penny (even when Penny was being her most stubborn, anxious self), and was extra gentle with getting her comfortable with us being away for the week. Carolina sent updates regularly and would consult with me when she had questions. I was never once worried about Penny, or our cat Boss. Carolina was also quick to let me know that Penny had developed some goopy eyes, and with her background, was able to recommend an ointment that I could order on Amazon and have it there the next day. She was able to get Penny's eyes all taken care of and even put the remaining treatment schedule on my kitchen calendar for me to continue upon our return. I trusted Carolina implicitly while we were gone and would highly recommend her!

Safety, trust & environment

I am extremely vigilant of my client’s pets and their safety, along with the safety of their property. I do not allow any of my client dogs to run off leash or meet other animals while they are in my care to prevent unwanted accidents.

Information Carolina R. would like to know about your pet

I love to know all about your dog's personality! As a sitter with a background in dog training, I incorporate special behavioral tactics to make your dog feel as comfortable as possible even if training isn't part of the services you are paying for. Shy dogs prefer to be interacted with and shown body language that is significantly different than that of an outgoing and confident dog so I love catering to them. Outside of that, I like knowing the necessities like food allergies, details pertaining to medically needy pets, their home schedule and triggers to any problem behaviors I should avoid.

A typical day

I offer enrichment services in addition to my regular sitting which involves offering your animals the opportunity to play with food toys to interact with a toy for their meals, snuffle mats where the animals have to sniff through a mat and use their senses to eat and sniff walks. Sniff walks are 30 minute walks where I stop everywhere your dog wants as long as it is safe and let them dictate the path of the walk. This is excellent mental stimulation and helps decompress dogs that spend most of their days indoors, suppressing their natural instinct to explore with their nose.
