I Like Big Mutts and I Cannot Lie

Pet care experience

I have owned and worked with a variety of animals throughout my lifetime, with specific interest in dogs and horses. I understand that each dog is a unique animal, based on its breed characteristics and individual history and experiences, and I recognize that it is not "just a dog" but a loved part of the family. Personally I have owned two Rottweilers (both adopted/rescued) which I trained in formal obedience and earned the AKC Canine Good Citizen and ATTS Temperment Test certificates. I have also been a dog-sitter and walker for friends, family and neighbors. I feel comfortable handling dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds.

Okay -- I am Audrey's Mom, so I may not be objective here, but I know her well. Audrey has always possessed a special gift with animals, from gerbils to horses. She trains with love, compassion and great skill. She is dependable, caring and competent. She pays attention and see the signals animals send. Her Equine Science degree gives her professional knowledge of the health and care issues. Most important: Audrey enjoys spending time with animals and they love her!

Information Audrey M. would like to know about your pet

Does the dog have any previous "formal" training in obedience or is it currently involved in any formal training? Does the dog have any behavioral issues, is it well-socialized with other dogs and is it trained to walk in a relaxed "at heel" position? Is the dog spayed/neutered? Where does the dog stay when left home alone (free access to the home, confined to one area by a gate, kept in a crate/kennel, left in yard)? Is the dog territorial or shy of strangers? Is the dog used to being around children, other dogs, or other animals? How is the dog rewarded for good behavior? Is the dog currently house-broken? What kind of collar and leash system is used for exercise (flat collar, chain collar, prong collar, head halter, harness)? Does the dog wear a collar at all times and does it accept having the collar put on and removed? Is the dog current on vaccinations, deworming, and flea/tick prevention? Does the dog have specific known allergies, foods or treats or other dietary restrictions? Does the dog have any known separation anxiety or destructive tendencies when left alone? I have no breed preferences but understand that breeds and mixes of certain types have unique temperaments and drives, energy levels, etc.

A typical day

Each dog has its own needs and I am prepared to adjust activities based on the individual dog. If the dog already has some formal obedience training I would be willing to reinforce that training the dog already has, by doing simple exercises such as working "at heel" or doing simple commands based on things that the dog already knows. However, I am not there as a "professional" trainer. In compliance with local laws, all exercise outside of a fenced enclosure on the owner's property would be done on-leash.
