Pet care experience

My name is Ashley and I never had a real pet growing up so I am ALL about dogs! I am a volleyball coach and student who plans a little too well... I find I have too much free time and a very flexible schedule. I should mention that I am a morning person. I like to play, walk/ run, groom, pet, snuggle and more! My cousin's dog, a black lab mix named Mikey, has been living with me at my parents house for the last 2 and a half years. I first started pet sitting 3 years ago for my cousin's middle aged dog while she played basketball professionally in the US and abroad internationally. My brother lived in her apartment while she was away, so initially, I walked Mikey in the afternoon while he was at work. Last year, at 11 years old, he tore and had surgery to fix his CCL (a dog's ACL/ MCL). For many dogs at this age, this would mark the beginning of the end: injury could lead to a decline in physical activity, muscle atrophy, followed by a drastic decrease in energy. In the last year and a half since his injury, he did have some ups and downs on the path to recovery. He doesn't like water, it rained for so long and he didn't want to walk. He gained some weight, he lost quite a of muscle also partially due to his recently diagnosed Cushing's disease. Mikey today, at 12 years old remains very active, taking 2-3 walks a day (of various lengths depending on the weather). Sadly, my cousin is moving across the country and taking her dog with her, so here I am, filling the hole in my heart.

Ashley is the best dog sitter that I know and is completely in tune with dogs that she meets. She took care of my dog, Mikey, on and off for years and in many ways became a prime caregiver of sorts. Her fun-loving, attentive style works well with any dog and lifted my old dog's spirit notably. Ashley goes above and beyond in her attention to detail from any pills or extensive care that a dog may need, and she stops nothing short of ensuring that the dog is comfortable, happy, and supremely cared for. I have yet to meet another who is better than Ashley at caring for dogs. From someone whose dog is more than just a dog, but a family member, best friend, and companion, Ashley is worth every cent and more, and I cannot thank her enough. When I get my next dog, Ashley will be my first call.

Information Ashley P. would like to know about your pet

I like to know about a dog's temperament. Of course I'll learn as I go, but knowing house/ personal rules and commands, likes, dislikes, and knowing how your dog feels about the mailman, gardener, and strangers, in advance are all very helpful. For example, my cousin's dog is very good with strangers coming to our house. Mikey growls and barks when there's a knock at the door or a car door closes in the driveway but calms when he can see and smell the person. He generally accepts them when they act like they belong. If someone flinches at his growl, he will remain on guard until the person relaxes. Mikey blatantly prefers the company of women. My cousin's rules include Mikey not being allowed in the kitchen or to hover if someone has food. He interacts well with other dogs, but at 12 years old is over the play fight and bark stage. He's content with just a sniff before he continues his walk. He understands the words "gentle" when taking treats and "wait" when crossing the street. All bets are off in the presence of squirrels and birds. He dislikes mailpersons and gardeners and poolmen in general (because they usually flinch at his bark through the door) but has met and been friendly with regulars them before. He walks himself and needs very little guidance. He loves carrots and any meat or dog treat, dislikes pills so they must be hidden in meat. He is well trained to respond to the smell of and the word "treat"

A typical day

Depending on age, weight, health and activity level, we can walk around the block, through the neighborhood, to the park, through the park, go to the dog park, or the beach. We will fetch, and tug of war, possibly get brushed or have a bath, or just relax together. It really depends on the dog.
