I have had pets, literally, all my life, and am currently (and joyfully) owned by a 79-pound dog (Biscuit) and three cats (Oscar de la Yenta, Dashiell Hammett, and Winston Blueblood). Most of the beneficiaries in my Last Will and Testament are animal charities. As much as I adore puppies and kittens (and I so do), if the opportunity arises, my next adoption will be a senior pet. I am retired from the corporate workforce, have the heart and time to love, honor, and care for animals who bring so much goodness to the lives of us humans. As for walking dogs, it is something I feel they deserve, both physically and pleasurably (don't know why they need to pee on every plant they pass, but they're entitled to do so, and I don't mind waiting one bit). Because a good walk usually ends in some panting, I always make sure that I change out their water before we leave, so it's fresh when they return. I will not allow them to walk on hot asphalt or concrete, so I will find places they can stretch their legs without hurting their paws, even if it means spending time with them in their own yard (on a leash if not fenced in) or walking on easements. I'm also very protective of animals in my care, so I would want to know if they are other-animal-friendly in advance (my dog isn't, so I've gotten pretty adept at spotting oncoming rovers and switching directions).
