About this sitter:
I work at home as a Research Associate, and I have always been an animal lover. My dogs and I enjoy having extra company. My yard is a certified wildlife habitat, which means there are lots of birds and squirrels to watch.
Melo and I both enjoy having dogs stay with us. Melo loves every person and dog he meets - he is gentle and playful with puppies, loves to run and romp with dogs near his own size, and he's respectful of smaller and larger dogs.
The hardest thing about pet-sitting is saying goodbye when they return to their families!
Melo and I completed Level 1 & 2 Good Behavior and Manners courses at Wag & Train. We both learned a lot in these classes; I learned that dog training is as much about teaching people to understand and communicate with dogs as it is about teaching dogs.
Why I love dog sitting
My heart was melted by the first dogs I knew as a child, my uncle's Irish Setter name Rusty and my Grandma's Schnauzer named Gretchen. I thought Rusty was even cooler than Lassie, and Gretchen was just the cutest little thing. I didn't actually live with a dog (I did have cats and fishes) until about 10 years ago when I cared for a friend's dog in my home for several months while she was coordinating a big move. Sharing my home with a dog brought so much warmth and cheer that I knew I needed to adopt a dog of my own. So, I adopted Melo from the Denver Dumb Friends League.
I wanted to be the best adoptive dog parent I could be, so I read all kinds of books on puppy training, dog development, dog behavior, and nutrition. Melo and I took some positive training classes at Wag & Train where I learned that dog training is as much about teaching people as pets, and Melo earned Level 1 & 2 Good Behavior and Manners class certificates.
Meet my pets
Melo is a 10 year old mystery mixed breed dog that I adopted from DDFL. He is gentle and calm (well, he's calm after the initial excitement of meeting new friends, that is), and often has a calming effect on other dogs. He loves every person and dog he meets.
Lucky was a little lost dog I found in the median of a busy street; he was scared and sad and showed many signs of neglect, but now he is cleaned up, has learned some basic commands, and he is learning social skills. He's very affectionate and especially loves other dogs his size.
Two 12 year old cats also share our home. They warm up quickly to friendly dogs, and despite their age they still like to play every once in a while.
About my yard
I have a large back yard with a six foot wooden privacy fence for secure room to run, and a large dog door dog for easy access (and of course I'll provide door service for dogs who aren't familiar with pet doors).
My experience administering medication
I can administer medication while you are away. Just let me know what method tends to work best for your pet.
Any health concerns that I should be aware of, where your pet prefers to walk/run/play, if there is anything that your pet really likes or dislikes, what ever is unique about caring for your pet.
Here's where we'll take our walks
There is a dog park that is a short drive from my home for dogs who enjoy active and social time. Sand Creek Park is even closer for an on-leash walk in a nice urban wildlife area. We can always go for a walk around the neighborhood. And fetching in the yard is fun too. I'll do whatever your pet is most accustomed to and you are most comfortable with.
Your dog's sleeping arrangement
Where ever s/he is most comfortable--I'll try to keep it as similar to your routine as possible.
Time I'll spend with your dog
I work from home so I am available to the pets all day. Dogs often need extra attention when their people are away; lots of love and play time can help reassure them in your absence.
Time I'll spend with your dog
One hour per visit. If you need something different, just let me know.
