I raised a male pug for about 15 years and cared for him in every way I could. I always fed him and would check to see if he had water in his bowl several times a day. I would let him outside in the backyard whenever he wanted to go outside, and let him in whenever he was ready to come back in. He was trained to go wait by the back door whenever he needed to go potty, which is visible from the dining room, kitchen, family room, and hallway. I would always play with him when he brought a toy over by me if I was just sitting around on my phone. When they are sleeping, I let them sleep. If I had guests knock on the door, or knew guests were coming, I would put the dog in the backyard or in their bed before letting the guest come in, then introduce them to the dog.
