I had already been asking for a dog of my own, and my mom thought this was my chance to show whether I was ready for one. As the story goes, I so thoroughly surprised my mom by how responsibly I cared for Sissy, that as my 5th birthday crept up, she had already started scouting the humane society for a puppy. That's when Jake, my husky border collie mix, first came into my life. We started our journey together when he was as tall as me, and continued it all the way to the end, his head on my lap at the Veterinary Clinic, he at 16 years old and I at 20. Along the way I had also picked up Samson, an adult beagle, from family friends, who I cared for until the end of his life, as well. For the last several years I took care of other people's dogs exclusively, but I am happy to report that in 2023 I have finally adopted my own fur baby again! Her name is Maya Jama and she is a rescue, a 25 lb miniature schnauzer and terrier mix. Because of this I have retired from overnight dog sitting, but I am 100% available for walks and drop-ins!
