Taking care of dogs since I was 10!

Pet care experience

Please note due to injury recovery, walk services are limited to dogs under 50lbs or dogs that are perfect on leash (no risk of yanking or pulling). Insured by Pet Sitters Association. I have experience caring for dogs of all sizes, from a tiny Yorkie to a giant Bernese Mountain Dog. As a 10 year old, not only was I a few years into being responsible for feeding my two dogs dinner every night, but I briefly worked as a dog sitter for my neighbors. I have previous experience and training by the PSPCA as a dog walker, learning how to approach and handle dogs at the shelter. I have cared for my family's Bernese Mountain Dog on several occasions to allow my parents to go on weekend trips and week long vacations. I helped my partner care for his roommate's boxer mix puppy every Friday evening for the two months his friend needed us to take care of her in the evenings while he worked. This included cleaning up dog vomit one evening from her crate. In December 2019, I adopted my first rescue dog with my partner, as all prior dogs I've owned and cared for have been family dogs. I enrolled us in an obedience training program shortly after and I now have even more tools in my belt for successful walks. My own dog receives daily walks where I have practiced these skills and commands ("Focus", "this way", "leave it"), along with my own safety commands ("wait", "cross") that I would be happy to use with your dog also during walks. I have some cat care experience, and can provide "hands off" care for cats. I have some mild cat allergies, but still try to provide affection for cats who desire that. I have cared for over 25 cats from 10 different families in the last two years, so I'm happy to take on jobs that include (or even exclusively are for) cats. I have experience administrating insulin and oral medication to cooperative cats. I do not have experience or comfort with administering medication to non-cooperative cats.

She is the best! I started with her when my dog was a puppy and I’m so glad I have her as I need. He loves her and is super comfortable with her. Thank you Alicia!

I'm always observate of flight risk when entering through the door, if that is a concern. When first meeting your dog, I will default to the technique taught to me by the PSPCA how to safely introduce myself to the dogs at the shelter. It's important that I try to let dogs approach me first and give me a sniff before I try to pet them. Your dogs comfort with me is important, and I want to make a good first (second, third, however many) impression. I take my own dog on a daily walk, and I've learned to become very observant. I evaluate route as I go (is there another dog, is the road busy, is there sidewalk), the immediate surroundings (is there something on the ground they might get into, is there grass to pee), and the dog themself and what they are doing or their body language is telling me.

Information Alicia H. would like to know about your pet

For dog sitting, it is absolutely essential I know the dog's temperament with strangers. As the owner of a shy but non-aggressive dog, I understand some dogs just need someone to come in, get them settled with food, water, and potty, and get out without too much physical interaction. Along with this, any particular triggers or "no touch" zones if they are mostly friendly but sensitive or reactive about certain activities (eating, treating) or areas of their body (they do not like their feet touched). For walking, I would like to be made aware of any habits or triggers. Do they like to eat stuff on the ground? Will they bark at every dog or person they see? Will they try to chase squirrels? I'd like to request your dog have a harness if they pull any, even if it's only when they see a squirrel. I am not the strongest person, but have found I can easily maintain control of any dog either pulling or excited over another dog (or squirrel or rabbit, ect) when using a harness.

A typical day

I am happy to do whatever the dog loves, whether that be playing inside or out in their yard with toys, chasing them around, doing obedience or brain games with treats, or simply getting lots of love and affection with pets. I'm happy to even brush your dog or cat if this is something they enjoy (but please only request if this is something they enjoy).
