Aspiring Animal Behaviorist

Pet care experience

My name is Alexis or Lexie and I have recently started the process of becoming a dog trainer (self teaching, mostly). I am using this site to hopefully help with my self learning as well as have an excuse to spend more time with various other animals. I was born in 1995 and live in a house with one human (besides me), two cats, and soon-to-be one dog (currently introducing the cats). At the time, I cannot care for animals in my own home and am uncertain that I will anytime soon. I went to school for Veterinary Assisting, but left halfway through because it wasn't for me. I realized I wanted to be specialized in behavior and the school wasn't sufficient enough to bother staying. During my time there, however, I volunteered at the Tulsa SPCA where I took care of some of the animals sheltering there, including giving baths and cleaning the kennels. I have also worked as a kennel attendant at a veterinary hospital for three months which included feeding the dogs/cats, taking the dogs outside, caring for sick/injured animals, giving medication, and general cleaning up. I quit because they weren't as sanitary as I would have liked and to have more time to focus on my area of study. I have lived with animals all of my life and while in school I accumulated experience in taking care of various animals including dogs, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, and more. I am not limited to dogs and cats and would be happy to discuss taking care of your other indoor animals. I know that inviting a stranger into your home (especially when you aren't there) isn't something most people are comfortable with (nor should they be!), which is why I suggest for you not to have me watch your pet until you have a good feeling about me. However you wish to accomplish this is up to you. You could set up a day that I "watch" your pet with you still being there, or we can meet somewhere (preferably with any animals I'll be watching), or whatever else you can think of. If you're fine with letting me be in your house right away, that's fine, although I would rather meet you and your animal(s) first at least a day beforehand. I am currently unemployed, so I have lots of time to spend on my new friends! First Aid & CPR class will be taken in the near future. Don't be afraid to ask any questions you might have for me!

Information Alexis M. would like to know about your pet

In order to efficiently and safely look after your ball of fur (or ball of.. scales?), it's important that you tell me of any behavioral issues they might have (including whether or not they can be picked up, or handled in the case of caged animals). I may even be able to help you with them (or study so I can)! I don't see myself denying any client due to behavioral issues (it wouldn't make sense considering my choice of study!), so you don't need to worry about that. I also need to know of any medications they take and how they take them, as well as their feeding schedule, bathroom schedule, any special requirements (help up stairs, etc), anything you're attempting to train them or what you already have trained them (no begging, stay off the furniture, or even sit/stay/lay down/etc), and anything they tend to be afraid/cautious of or aggressive towards (whether you think it has anything to do with me watching them or not). At the moment I'm only working with smaller breed dogs until I get more comfortable in my abilities as both a sitter and a behaviorist, so keep me in mind even if you have a larger breed! I'd like to be able to see proof of vaccination in order to protect my pets (can't be too careful!) and myself (papers, not tags).

A typical day

I am capable of providing services like bathing, nail clipping, and teeth brushing (provided you have the necessary supplies). I can give medication and will soon be able to teach your dog new tricks or possibly help you with behavior problems they might have. If you have special trick requests, I can try to study that before any other areas where possible (can't skip the basics!). However, I can't make any promises of being able to do it soon, only promises that I will try to learn (if I haven't already). I have plenty of time to spend on the animal; taking it outside, teaching a trick, playing, etc. If they can get along, I can bring my own dog as a playmate or possibly have my dog visit if you don't want her in your home. (Socialization!) If they don't get along, it will have to wait until I am more versed in my behavioral studies.
