When caring for any animal, my goal is to provide a friendship to start on. At the first point of contact, I usually greet the pup(s) and kneel down a safe distance away from them to build trust. There are times I have laid completely flat on the ground with one arm outstretched to show that I am of no danger. Once friendship and familiarity are established, the rest is cake. Over the past year, I’ve learned about different dog types— I grew up with dogs that responded best to the “excited voice” and the “stern you’re-in-trouble-voice.” I was used to leaning into the excited voice for the sake of communicating with dogs. However, at home, we have an Australian Shepherd who is very smart. He knows a lot of English. I’ve learned, with my partner’s help, that he can absolutely take a command as if you’re having a conversation. And not in the “baby voice.” Needless to say, I can adapt to whatever style you would prefer. As far as taking care of dogs, I’m very good with the routines of food, medicines, and potty breaks. I’m aware that every dog is different and needs (and expects) different things, and for that I am here to help!
