Pet care experience

Growing up my family pretty much always had at least a dog as well as many other animals, and I’ve always loved interacting with animals in general. Dogs are by far my favorite, my previous job was at West Paw (a producer of dog products), but I’ve lived with cats, frogs, snakes, sugar gliders, rabbits and a few other. Plus I’ve had dogs with medical issues like heart problems and suffering from seizures, so I feel like I can react in a situation where an animal needs extra assistance. I am not a trained vet but I’m very interested in the medical field both human and animal.

If more stars were available we would give them. Alex was awesome. We have a high energy sometimes sassy German Shepherd and he was great with her. He also took amazing care of the house while we were gone- going above and beyond to empty the full dishwasher we left behind and washing everything he used before he left. We would love to work with Alex again!

Alex was very gentle and kind with our senior dog Pedro. Pedro warmed up to him right away. Alex left the house very clean and tidy, so nice after a long road trip! He cared for a few outside plants that needed attention as well. I will definitely use Alex again for other trips planned this year!

Alex is extremely responsible and has a nurturing disposition. He has a way with animals and would be an asset to Rover. I recommend his services.

I believe that first and foremost you have to try to establish trust, not always an easy thing with some animals, doing so by maintaining eye contact and allowing the animal to sniff/get used to you for a minute. Once they warm up a bit ill try to play with them if they are interested, if not just a calm interaction. As far as walks go I usually like to use hand signals that shelters commonly use and teach, and I try to get a briefing on common commands used around the house before hand if possible. If the dog(s) I’m walking starts to misbehave or get wound up I will just stop and wait until they are ready to listen. I have had to get between aggressive dogs before, in that situation I try to hold my dog close to me and keep my body between the dogs if possible, mainly getting my dog to avoid eye contact or any signs of aggression to not escalate the situation. I’ve only had that happen a few times, if I am warned that a dog doesn’t respond well to other dogs/animals then I can hopefully react before that situation arises. I always try to be respectful to animals no matter what.

At the moment I am enrolling in an EMT course to get my EMT-B Certification in Missoula, the course is mostly online and can be done whenever so my schedule can be moved around quite a bit.
