County shelter volunteer

Pet care experience

I've been living with dogs my whole life and can perform a variety of pet care tasks including dog walking, feeding, brushing teeth, hair brushing, administering oral medication, cleaning up toileting accidents and other messes, scooping litter boxes, and bathing. I have many years of experience with senior dogs, disabled dogs, puppies, and anxious dogs. I’ve volunteered at the King County animal shelter (RASKC) as a dog walker for over a year, and have a Red Cross certification in dog and cat first aid and CPR. My experience with cats is more limited, but I have some experience administering oral medications and dealing with fearful behaviours.

Alex is a "star" dog/home care provider. He is truely responsible and went the extra mile to help train and ensure our pup's stress was minimized. In our case he cared for a real "rascal" 7-month old puggle puppy. Great communication through out our trip. We came home to a clean and tidy home and a happy pup. We just couldn't have asked for more. Thank You Alex!!!

Alex is phenomenal, absolutely the best! They provided loving care, companionship, play and even training to my two darling dogs while taking excellent care of my home during a 12 day dog sitting. From the initial contact to the departure sign out Alex was professional, prompt and kind showing great skill and patience with my pups. They were very thorough throughout taking lots of notes and asking good questions at the start & provided photos, videos and ongoing detailed commentary during their stay - so impressive! Their demeanor is well suited to the job and instantly put the dogs and me at ease. The house was well cared for too, as clean as when I left - so nice to return to. Do not hesitate to select Alex for any of your pet care or home sitting needs as they go above and beyond and truly dedicate themselves to extraordinary service. Thanks again Alex, we could not have asked for more!

Alex was nothing short of a gem. Our sweet cat Charlie had a bit of a rough week - was a little spooked (we think after having banging on our roof for several days from repairs) and had an accident / vomit + had trouble taking his medicine. It was unusual behavior, but Alex approached it each day with deep care. He reported tremendous detail, and worked with me to try the best approaches. And Charlie got very comfortable with him! We feel very lucky that we have found Alex.

Safety, trust & environment

The safety of your pets is my number one priority. I walk dogs individually if they are reactive, pull on the leash, or otherwise don't respond well to walking together. I will avoid getting too close to other dogs when walking in case of reactivity from either dog. Brushing teeth will only be done if the dog has some experience and responds well to it. I will only administer oral medications. I will follow your instructions to avoid triggers for fear and aggression to keep everyone safe. Please note that I will not be able to accept stays for dogs weighing over 40lbs if they lunge or pull on the leash. I will also not accept bookings if you use a prong collar or shock collar for your dog of any size.

Information Alex C. would like to know about your pet

Let me know if your dog is reactive towards other animals or barks a lot on walks, for everyone's safety. I have a lot of experience with reactive dogs, but it's necessary to know beforehand if we're likely to encounter any problems. If your cat or dog has any medical or behavioral issues, give me as much information as you can so I can be certain that I can provide them with the care they need.

A typical day

At drop-in visits I will be sure to give your cat or dog all the attention they want, and be sure to provide some enriching play time. I will feed them, fill up water bowls, brush them, and clean up any toileting accidents or messes. For dogs, we’ll play outside or go on a quick walk if we have enough time. I like to take dogs on walks around the neighbourhood and to quiet parks, but I especially love trails. We can either walk briskly or take time to enjoy all the smells, depending on your dog's pace.

Availability

My schedule is generally flexible. While pet sitting, I only ever leave for short periods of time if I need to go out, and I avoid having too many other commitments. I am happy to schedule my other activities around your pets’ needs and routines. I will likely be halting house sitting services in late April/early May as I am getting a puppy of my own sometime around then. I will continue offering drop in visits and dog walking, but my schedule may be slightly less flexible than usual while the puppy is still young. I get a lot of drop in and walk bookings for around midday, so please let me know if there’s any flexibility in the times you request.
