2017-02-23 16:11:11 -0600 answered a question How do you get a dog to stop barking at other dogs outside the car?

If you have successfully crate-trained your dog so that the crate is a happy-happy joy-joy place where your dog has learned to lie down and relax, add a crate to the back of your car. Load the dog into the crate and give her an excellent, long-lasting chew item (such as a Kong with frozen goodie inside).

Get a smaller crate, or block part of it off. They don't want to sit in their own feces/urine... so the less space the less likely they are to do it. My puppy did that until I blocked half her crate off with boxes and blankets. I took her out every couple hours... then as she got older I took her out less and less. Eventually, she could go all night without needing out. Now she gets to sleep in my bed. You have to be patient, but it'll work!

2017-02-23 16:03:01 -0600 answered a question Can I catch a cold from my dog?

Dogs don't catch the flu like humans do. They can catch kennel cough which will give them flu like symptons. They will get a stuffed up nose, runny eyes etc. If this happens, antibiotics from the vet will help to clear it up.

The most obvious symptom is, of course, an enlarged abdomen. You may also observe labored breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting, a weak pulse, and paleness in the nose and mouth.

2017-02-23 15:49:04 -0600 answered a question Why does my dog hump my leg?

A dog may hump a leg as a simple display of playfulness and attention-seeking, kind of like an invitation to a "play" party. A particularly anxious dog may even mount your leg as a means of easing his stress. Dogs often do this to other canines, as well.

2017-02-23 15:25:21 -0600 answered a question What should I ask an owner before a stay?

1) Their contact information if something should happen and you need to get a hold of them. 2) Vet information (Name Address phone number) 3) What is the normal routine for the dog? ( When does the dog normally go for a walk? When do they feed the dog [morning, evenings, free feed?] How do they put the dog to bed at night?) 4) How long is the dog normally left alone or how long can you leave the dog alone for? 5) What are the house rules for the dog? ( Is he allowed on the couch? What rooms can he go into?) 6) What kind of commands does the dog know? ( sit, stay, come, off, no) 7) What are some bad habits the dog has and what they do to help fix it? 8) What kind of treats is ok for the dog? Is he allergic to any foods? 9) Really important if you take the dog out for a walk, is there anything that the dog is afraid of or will set him off? 10) Does the dog do anything that only the owner would understand; scratch the arm, whimper, bark , etc?

2017-02-23 15:11:11 -0600 answered a question Why does my dog hump the air?

It can be a sign of dominance, a reaction to something that has excited the dog, like visitors arriving, or a sign that a dog hasn’t been socialized correctly and doesn’t know appropriate canine behavior.

2017-02-23 15:01:56 -0600 answered a question What are treats?

Treats help reinforce the special bond between you and your dog, and are a good way to reinforce positive behavior. Treats are also a definite help during training.

2017-02-23 14:56:41 -0600 answered a question Why does my dog grunt like a pig?

Often dogs "snort" or make sounds like that. It may be just some type of "effort" they are expending when they exert energy. I've heard many hundreds of dogs do that. It is also a way they clear their breathing passages of some small irritant.

2017-02-23 14:52:45 -0600 answered a question Why does my dog howl at sirens?

Howling is one of your pup's vocalizations, which he uses to communicate with you and other dogs. Dogs may howl out of pain, loneliness or when provoked by a sound.
