What pet health insurance do you have?

I'm thinking about getting pet insurance for my dogs to cover them in case they get sick or injured or something. My worst fear is having to decide between paying a ton of money and putting my dog down. What company do you have pet insurance through? Do you like them? What does yours cover? Would you mind sharing the cost? Any companies or policies I should avoid? Thanks!

Trupanion and Embrace Pet insurance are both great companies to look into. I would google what questions to ask pet insurance companies and get each answer answered and take a moment to evaluate the pros and cons of what each company says. I love EMBRACE. They are quick and very efficient!

Healthy Paws has been great! Annual deductible, not per incident. Great to work with and personal -- real people send me emails to check up on my dogs. Easiest insurance company ever! Cons: does not cover pre-existing conditions, or known expenses (annual check ups, vaccines, heartworm meds, etc.)

We were told by our dog's hip surgeon (took out both hips as a pup) that we could never get health insurance for her. As she approaches her 14th birthday we wish to do whatever we can to make her life comfortable (she's happy and healthy and a mascot) until she wishes to go. We will be there.

I have read that all pet insurance do not cover pre-existing conditions anyway...has that changed for some? I have Trupanion for my furbaby and they have been great so far. They cover 90% and they work directly with the vet so you don't have to fork out a lot of money in the beginning.

Healthy Paws is the BEST. Their customer service is great, no annual cap. Cover almost everything.

Trupanion, highly recommend! They've already paid off over $5000 for my dog. They cover 90% of the cost for accidents, injuries and illnesses. The reason I chose them was because I have a Boston Terrier, and they cover hereditary and congenital disorders which was important to me given the short snout, etc. Many other companies do NOT cover hereditary/congenital, so you need to look into that depending on what breed you have.

Great answer and definitely a positive note as far as pet insurances goes. Many Owners might not know, but Rover's insurance doesn't cover issues that may arise with respect to pre-existing conditions or breed-specific conditions like you mention. This would be a perfect example!

We use Embrace Pet Insurance and have been for all 4 of our fur babies for over 6 years. Easy to submit claims and fast reimbursements too. They have an option to cover well visits too (although we only use them for “sick” or emergencies). Never a problem and reasonable rates. I believe pre existing conditions are covered too.

This is not a marketing post.! I don't have pet insurance but I do have my pet on the PetSmart Banfield care plan. I pay monthly and it has been worth it for me. It is perfect for our budget because I can't dole out huge amounts at one time for pet care. It cover most everything but meds. I have to pay those out of pocket. It's not insurance but to me it's the next best thing.

Don’t use Pets Best. They constantly raise their rates to get rid of older dogs.

I also use VPI (Nationwide). It costs about $30 a month for their most expensive plan, and in the one year I've had it, they've paid off 80-90% of both my dog's surgeries. (Hope they don't drop me after this last surgery, though!)

Nationwide, formerly doing business as Veterinary Pet Insurance. I believe the prices are based on factors including how comprehensive you want the policy (there's different levels or tiers), breed, and age (your older dog would likely cost more to insure now). If you want to share your email, I'll send you a referral email link.

I know a few people that have paid tens of thousands of dollars for their young dogs who were not insured at the time. Accidents, health problems, and preventative care, where they could have had coverage, can happen at any age.

I don`t want to recommend specific insurance because we have different dogs and they live in different environments, so what can fit my needs will not fit yours. But I would be happy to tell you about https://petinsurancefinder.com/ (PetInsuranceFinder), this is a web service that eases the process of finding the perfect pet insurance. This is really a good tool if you have no idea which insurance to choose, try it.
