Will my dog develop worse separation anxiety if I bring him to work with me daily?

I bring my dog to work with me every day. He is a little Jack Russell Terrier and we have been doing this routine for about 3.5 years now. He comes in with me every day and has his little open pen to hang out in by my desk. I am worried that this routine might make his separation anxiety much worse than it would be if I only brought him in a couple days per week. Is there any research behind this? Does anyone have experience with this type of situation?

It would make it very difficult to ever be able to leave him at home in future :(

It shouldn't cause his anxiety to be worse when you leave. In fact, since cortisol levels spike with a stressful event and take days to return to normal levels, if you're able to give your dog reprieves between spikes, he should be better prepared to handle the next stressful period. It's recommended when dealing with separation anxiety that you minimize the amount of time your dog has to be left alone during your training period so you can avoid putting him over threshold.

Thanks Laura. It sounds like it might make sense to start leaving him at home a little more often should my situation change where I can't bring him in everyday.

No! If your dog can safely, come to work, it's great that you bring him as much as possible! Putting him in a crate more often will not make him more comfortable in there. What will make him more comfortable is just doing safe and positive crate training at home and when you do leave. As long as you do it right, it doesn't matter how often he goes in, he'll feel calm and comfortable when you leave. If taking your pooch to work makes you both happy, keep it up!
