How do you stop a 6 month old puppy from crying and barking in his crate at night?

The 6 month old puppy I dog sat for wakes up during the night by starting out with wining and then proceeds to barking. The puppy normally gets fed at 6 am, but woke up 2 different times, one at 4:45 am then the next night 3:30 am. After 15 minutes of him being persistent, I put him outside thinking he needed a potty break, but he didn't need to go out. At that point, he's wide awake and is not interested going back in his crate. Even if he stays up later than his bedtime, he still gets up during the night. His crate is probably triple his size which includes a few bones to chew on and a dog bed. Any suggestions?

Can you move the crate into the guest room? Sometimes if you warm a small towel and roll it the puppy will snuggle next to it and go back to sleep. Sounds like he misses his pet parents or someone in his room.

It sounds like he's a bit stressed out in the new environment. If he's otherwise fine in his crate and is just waking up earlier than usual, it's probably the anxiety of being in a new place and should get better over time. It may help to move his crate closer to you so he doesn't feel as alone or keep some chews handy to help him relax again if he wakes up early.

For me, lack of sleep is one of the hardest issues to deal with when hosting a new dog; if it's a problem that persists throughout a stay, I'd seriously consider whether or not I want to host that particular dog again. Not only is it hard on me, it's a clear sign that a dog is not adjusting well to my household and perhaps a different situation might be better for him in the future.

Thanks Laura! I failed to mention I house sit in the pet parents home. His crate is in the owner's bedroom but I sleep in the guest bedroom. You're right lack of sleep is rough and during that weekend I was lacking in energy to care for 2 dogs. I left a note to the pet parents and asked if they had any suggestions. Hopefully it was a phase and the puppy will be better next time.
