How to stop my dog from pooping on the carpet?

I have had my dog for about 4 months. I have tried to train her on the puppy pads but she only goes when I am out of the room. This way I can not correct her in the right way. I am only home for about 5 hours a day during the week and Sunday and all day Friday, Saturday. I need some help with this because I am thinking of giving her away but I really don't want to do that I love my dog. If anybody has any tips for me please let my know. Thanks

If you are only home for 5 hours a day during the week, I would imagine that she has a hard time holding it for so many hours while alone. Are you able to install a doggie-door, so that she could go outside when you are not there?

No I live in a apartment and she is skittish about going outside without me. I really need tips on how to effectively pad train her. If anyone can help with this please do. And also help with leaving her at home without closing her up in a room.

Hi April- Can you afford to have someone stop in and take your puppy out several times a day? If not, do you have a friend, neighbor or someone that can take the puppy out a few times during the day? The puppy does need to be taken out several times a day and also needs socializing. Being home alone for such a long period of time during the day could cause anxiety and lots of other issues, not to mention lack of potty training. That is hard on an adult dog. My neighbor found a great home for her sweet, adult lab since she was working so much and saw that her lab started chewing on his leg because he was bored. The lab belonged to her deceased husband and she loved the dog and wanted to keep him. It finally came down to what was best for her dog. That was a very, very difficult decision because the dog has been with her since he was a puppy. That is a very tough decision and you will need to consider all options. Good luck. -Kathleen D

Frequent potty breaks are necessary. Try to find a friend or neighbor that has a dog and trade sitting services. When you do take your pup outside reward immediately when he/she does her business. Same thing inside the house for the potty pads. Since your puppy goes when you are out of the room tether your puppy to you so every where you go they go. This way we can keep an eye on him/her and get them to the potty pad. The Reward.

Hi there, I would definitly hire a dog trainer or have a family member or even a neighbor stop in and look after her. Puppies need a whole lot of attention and especially if your not home enough to be with the sweet little pup.

If you don't want to hire a sitter, Fresh Patch makes pads specifically designed to help dogs and puppies that live in apartments do their thing; it's called a potty pad and it's made of real grass with a tray underneath to catch the pee. Your dog goes here and also learns/trains how to pee on grass (mimicking outside). Your best bet is to see if you have time to take the pup to a puppy training class once a week, like on Saturday mornings. They will be able to give you helpful hints. Only being home for five hours could make the dog mad, and they are showing it by pooping where they are not suppose to.
