What do you do about damages in your home?

I am watching a dog for 4 days now & all has been going well, Today my neighbor called stating the dog went through the bedroom screen window that was open just a little. Luckily my neighbor could catch the dog and put her back in my house. My question what do I do about the screen that was ripped? Do I ask the owners to pay for it? What do you suggest?

Unfortunately, sitters have zero protection from this. That insurance is for the clients. I learned this the hard way too!

Chalk it up to a learning lesson. Now you know that you have to protect your home to minimize potential damages. Actually, you are extremely lucky that your neighbor caught the dog before some tragedy unfolded.

When the owners return for the dog, you could share with them that you learned that their dog had a bit of separation anxiety because while you were away it got out through your bedroom screen, but your neighbor was able to return it to your home, and that you’ll need to have the screen repaired or replaced. Maybe if you say it in a really kind way that shows your concern for the dog, they’ll offer you something to help towards those costs. They are 100% not responsible for it.
