What are the dog walking on a long line basics?

I’m pet sitting a puppy that is used to walking on a long line. As I’m new to walking a dog with a long line, I’d like to learn the correct basics. I watched a few YouTube videos but would like to know from the Rover community any basics I should know. Thanks!

For housesitting, I’d recommend that at the meet and greet you walk with the owner and their dog around the area they would normally walk using the leash and harness that they usually use. That provides the best opportunity to discuss anything pertinent that might come up. If the owner already left, you could ask via messages or phone call (rover #) if they have any tips that they recommend as this set-up is new to you.

MO does not have a statewide leash law, which is unlike many other states. In highly developed areas ( like mine ), a maximum is 6 foot leash law exists. So I do not think it reflects negatively to ask for their tips on how they use the long lead, especially since this is a puppy. You can emphasize that you want to continue/ reinforce using the same training cues and words that they have been using.
