Why does my dog lick the couch?

Our Dachshund has the tendency to completely zone out, and just lick the back of the couch for 5-10 minutes. What could be causing this?

I have a dachshund and he will at times lick the sofa but it is usually from a specific taste or from food falling (salt, grease, ect.) If it seems like they do it a lot and not because of food, they may have a obsessive/compulsive disorder or something else related and should talk to your veterinarian.

We have found from our dog, that he licks because of our scent! Our other dog owns the couch. So he has licked it while cleaning himself, and has basically matted our couch so he continues to lick it to keep it matted.

There could be several reasons that your dog licks the couch. My Golden Retriever does it as well and we often drop food or crumbs on the couch so she is usually sniffing them out and hoping to get some remnants. For other dogs, it is a comfort thing. It makes them feel safe. Others do it as a simulated activity, like playing or walking. To try to stop this behavior, whenever you see them licking the couch, take them out for a walk or grab a chew toy and play with them!

my little dachshund does the same thing! I think it's from the salt we leave behind. He never licks the bed so i doubt it's our scent he's attracted to. Try rewarding him/her with treats when you order him to "stop" licking. It has worked on my little guy! good luck!!
